  Europe is a place of free movement among nations—or is it? The Schengen area, established in 1985 and today encompassing twenty-nine European countries, allows people, goods, and capital to cross borders without restraint. Schengen transformed European life, advancing both a democratic project of transnational citizenship and a neoliberal project of international free trade. But the right of free movement always excluded non-Europeans, especially migrants of color from former colonies of the Schengen states. In Europe without Borders, Isaac Stanley-Becker explores the contested creation of free movement in Schengen. 
   
   
   
  Schengen laid the groundwork for the making of a single market and the founding of the European Union. Yet its emergence is one of the great untold stories of modern European history, one hidden in archives long embargoed. Stanley-Becker is among the first to have access to records of the treatymaking and Europe without Borders offers a pathbreaking account of Schengen's creation. Stanley-Becker argues that Schengen gave a humanist cast to a market paradigm; but even in pairing the border crossing of human beings with the principles of free-market exchange, this vision of free movement was hedged by alarm about foreign migrants. Meanwhile, these migrants—the sans-papiers—saw in the promise of a borderless Europe only a neocolonial enterprise.

  An ethnographic analysis of how insecurity is at the heart of contemporary higher education. 
   
  Institutions of higher education are often described as “ivory towers,” places of privilege where students exist in a “campus bubble,” insulated from the trials of the outside world. These metaphors reveal a widespread belief that college provides young people with stability and keeps insecurity at bay. But for many students, that’s simply not the case. 
   
  Degrees of Risk reveals how insecurity permeates every facet of college life for students at public universities. Sociologist Blake Silver dissects how these institutions play a direct role in perpetuating uncertainty, instability, individualism, and anxiety about the future. Silver examined interviews with more than one hundred students who described the risks that surrounded every decision: which major to choose, whether to take online classes, and how to find funding. He expertly identified the ways the college experience played out differently for students from different backgrounds. For students from financially secure families with knowledge of how college works, all the choices and flexibility of college felt like an adventure or a wealth of opportunities. But for many others, especially low-income, first-generation students, their personal and family circumstances meant that that flexibility felt like murkiness and precarity. In addition, he discovered that students managed insecurity in very different ways, intensifying inequality at the intersections of socioeconomic status, race, gender, and other sociodemographic dimensions. Drawing from these firsthand accounts, Degrees of Risk presents a model for a better university, one that fosters success and confidence for a diverse range of students.

  Sri aurobindo

  Prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru once wrote, "It is extraordinary that a person who spent 14 years of his life cut off from India became a brilliant champion of Indian nationalism based on the philosophic and spiritual background of Indian thought." And this is exactly what it is. It was Aurobindo who influenced Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose to take the initiative of dedicating himself to the Indian National Movement full-time. Bose writes "The illustrious example of Aurobindo looms large before my vision. I feel that I am ready to make the sacrifice which that example demands of me."
  Aurobindo not only influenced people in India but across the whole wide world which included Margaret Woodrow Wilson, the daughter of the then US president Woodrow Wilson. Margaret came to the Pondicherry ashram in 1940 and stayed there until her death. While in the ashram she was given the name Nishta meaning dedication. Aurobindo's life had two aspects: political activism and spiritual activism. A person who doesn't understand either one of the aspects fails to understand Aurobindo as a whole. Even today Aurobindo is considered a powerful freedom fighter who played a vital role in the Indian Independence movement, a brick among the many who laid a firm foundation in building and uplifting India.
