After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of the most popular playwrights in London in the early 1890s.THE ENGLISH RENAISSANCE OF ART: 'The English Renaissance of Art' was delivered as a lecture for the first time in the Chickering Hall, New York, on January 9, 1882. A portion of it was reported in the New York Tribune on the following day and in other American papers subsequently.   The American Claimant is enormous fun. I'm here to celebrate the mad energy of this strange novel. In it we have the pleasure of seeing Mark Twain's imagination go berserk, writes Bobbie Ann Mason in her introduction. The American Claimant is a comedy of mistaken identities and multiple role switches—fertile and familiar Mark Twain territory.
