The Art of Status - Looted...

An illuminating exploration of the relationship between the restitution of looted art, global status, and the international construction of national cultural heritage. Why is art restitution a matter of politics? How does the artwork displayed in national museums reflect the international status of the state that owns it? Why do some states agree to return looted art and others resist?National art collections have long been a way for states to compete with each other for status, prestige, and cultural worth in international society. In many former imperial nations, however, these collections include art looted during imperial expansions and colonial occupations. While this was once a sign of high international standing, the markers of such status, particularly in the context of art, have since significantly changed. A new international legal and normative architecture governing art provenance developed after World War II and became institutionalized in the 1990s and 2000s. Since then, there have been national and global social movements demanding the return of looted art. This shift has established not only that looting is wrong but, more importantly, that restitution is morally right. As a result of this reframing of what it means to own art, an artifact's historical provenance has become a core element of its value and the search for provenance and demands for restitution have become a direct threat to state status. The same objects that granted states high international status now threaten to provoke status decline. In The Art of Status, Jelena Subotić illustrates the larger questions of how national cultural heritage is internationally constructed and how it serves states' desire for international status and prestige.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. Want to break into the film industry without film school, connections, or a trust fund?

Punk To Prestige is a raw, no-bullshit guide for outsiders who want a real career in film on their own terms. British-born screenwriter, filmmaker, and cult novelist Trevor Miller went from post-punk clubs and acid house basements to writing and directing award-winning films in Los Angeles—and here he shows you how an outsider can actually get in.

In Punk To Prestige, you’ll learn how to:

Turn a punk/outsider background into a distinctive filmmaking voice that gets remembered.

Build a body of work—shorts, scripts, micro-budget features—that opens real industry doors.

Network inside scenes and subcultures so collaborations and opportunities come to you.

Talk to agents, producers, and indie financiers without sounding green or giving away your power.

Leverage each small win into the next job, instead of letting projects disappear into the void.

Avoid the most common mistakes new filmmakers make with contracts, credit, and career choices.

If you’re a filmmaker, screenwriter, musician, or creative misfit who loves punk, underground scenes, and fiercely independent movies, this book hands you a street-level blueprint—not a fantasy. Read Punk To Prestige and start building a film career from the outside in.

Isokon and the Bauhaus in Britain

In the mid-1930s, three giants of the international Modern movement, Bauhaus professors Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and László Moholy-Nagy, fled Nazi Germany and sought refuge in Hampstead in the most exciting new apartment block in Britain. The Lawn Road Flats, or Isokon building, was commissioned by the young visionary couple Jack and Molly Pritchard and designed by aspiring architect Wells Coates. Built in 1934 in response to the question 'How do we want to live now?' it was England's first modernist apartment building and was hugely influential in pioneering the concept of minimal living. During the mid-1930s and 1940s its flats, bar and dining club became an extraordinary creative nexus for international artists, writers and thinkers. Jack Pritchard employed Gropius, Breuer and Moholy-Nagy in his newly formed Isokon design company and the furniture, architecture and graphic art the three produced in pre-war England helped shape Modern Britain.
This book tells the story of the Isokon, from its beginnings to the present day, and fully examines the work, artistic networks and legacy of the Bauhaus artists during their time in Britain. The tales are not just of design and architecture but war, sex, death, espionage and infamous dinner parties. Isokon resident Agatha Christie features in the book, as does Charlotte Perriand who Jack Pritchard commissioned for a pavilion design in 1930.
The book is beautifully illustrated with largely unseen archive photography, and includes the work of photographer and Soviet spy Edith Tudor-Hart, as well as plans and sketches, menus, postcards and letters from the Pritchard family archive. In Spring 2018, the Isokon building and Breuer, Gropius and Moholy-Nagy were honoured with a Blue Plaque from English Heritage.

The silent beginnings were more than just muted movies. They were the canvas on which the foundation of musical cinema was laid. Discover how the early 'talkies' paved the way for a genre that would captivate audiences for generations. Relive the Golden Age of Hollywood, where musicals became a symbol of hope, joy, and sometimes, escapist dreams. The 1930s introduced us to new cinematic possibilities, the 1940s anchored us during wartime with uplifting tunes, and the 1950s painted our screens with the vivacious colors of Technicolor dreams. Each era, with its unique flavor, changed the way we perceived musical films.

The transitional years of the 1960s and 1970s saw experimentation and rock operas, challenging traditional norms and ushering in new narratives. And as we approached contemporary times, the evolution didn't stop. The influence of pop culture, the Disney renaissance, and the push for innovation and diversity in the 2000s reshaped the landscape of musical cinema. Delve deeper into the themes that make musicals resonate with us—love, romance, social commentary, fantasy. Understand the meticulous effort behind direction, choreography, set design, and the magic of sound and score that binds the narrative. Celebrate the iconic performers, directors, composers, and lyricists who became legends in their own right.

As we trace the profound impact and legacy of musical films, Tunes of the Times allows us to reflect on cultural mirrors, accolades, and the promising future of this beloved genre. Join us on this melodious journey and understand why, through the ages, musical films have remained an enduring, enchanting, and essential part of our cultural tapestry.
