"Swan Lake" tells the love story of Prince Siegfried and Odette, who has been transformed by the sorcerer Rothbart into the Swan Queen. Prince Siegfried comes of age and celebrates his twenty-first birthday in the palace gardens. The next day he is expected to choose his future bride at the court ball. Near the castle, on the shores of Swan Lake, the swan maiden Odette emerges from the water in the moonlight. Siegfried is overwhelmed by her beauty and at once vows his love and fidelity. The curse should now be broken, yet Rothbart has plans of his own for Odette.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was a Russian composer whose ballets "Swan Lake", "The Sleeping Beauty" and "The Nutcracker" became cornerstones of the repertoire. He studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and later taught in Moscow, developing a melodic style that blends Western forms with Russian colour. His music gained international acclaim during his lifetime and he conducted the premiere of his "Symphony No. 6 'Pathétique'" in 1893 shortly before his death.

The sound of a countertenor, often described as ethereal and otherworldly, is both familiar and foreign—it is a high voice type, somewhere between what we might expect of a male and a female opera singer. Though we recognize the countertenor range from countless pop stars, experiencing it within the context of opera, powerful and penetrating, and, most important, without any amplification, is unsettling, beautiful, and profoundly moving.Countertenors today sing music written originally for castrati. Part oddity, part divinity, castrati are inextricably linked to the proliferation of opera from its inception in the seventeenth century through its expansion into the public sphere. The striking beauty of the male voice and the otherness of the sound make it fertile ground for creative invention and innovation, and evoke fascinating aspects of gender, sexuality, and identity. In Countertenor, Anthony Roth Costanzo, one of the world's leading opera singers—known in particular for his performance as Akhnaten in Philip Glass's opera of the same name—takes us through both his life and the history of his rare and remarkable voice. With wit and humor, Costanzo explores fascinating contradictions contained within the countertenor and narrates his own musical education and interests. The result is a lively and stirring account of an art form in flux, a story of reinvention and a life lived in harmony with art.

A grotesque and hilarious satire about the American dream, suburban living, and the corrupting influence of power, set in a world that could only have sprung from the unhinged and brilliant mind of John Waters. Listen as Waters himself acts out each role!On the verge of a suburban mental health crisis, frazzled and wildly unstable housewife Peggy (immortalized by Mink Stole on-screen) runs away from home with her maid and partner in crime, Grizelda (played with spectacular gumption by the sizzling Jean Hill), only to end up in Mortville, a shantytown filled with society’s rejects. Mortville is run by the evil Queen Carlotta, who parades through the cardboard streets taunting and terrorizing her subjects.John Waters’s wild and visionary fable lampoons everything from the staid conservatism of the American dream to race and class relations. The New York Times ranked Desperate Living at “the highest peak atop [John Waters’] trash heap of a filmography.” High praise indeed!A Macmillan Audio production from Farrar, Straus and Giroux
