Synopsis

The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, written by Bede in about AD 731, is a history of the Christian Churches in England, and of England generally; its main focus is on the conflict between the pre-Schism Roman Rite and Celtic Christianity. It is considered one of the most important original references on Anglo-Saxon history, and has played a key role in the development of an English national identity.

An argument for the centrality of the Eucharistic church in an increasingly tribal world.

As Western culture has secularized, the church has increasingly become marginalized and is seen as providing support and optional resources, rather than indispensable to the Christian life. In this volume, theologian Scott Cowdell argues for a recovery of the church as the proper context for Christian faith, life, and mission. In Why Church? Cowdell considers how we have arrived at this moment, examining how perceptions of the church have changed in response to increasing individualism and institutional failings. Suggesting that the Eucharistic Church embodies Christ's desire to draw humankind to him, Cowdell shows how the Christian life depends on Christian community.

Written with adult formation in mind and from a perspective of generous orthodoxy, Why Church? makes a provocative case for the centrality of the church to Christian life. Discussion questions at the conclusion of each chapter offer provocative conversation starters for any adult education group.

Life is a journey, full of surprises, emotions, possibilities, and encounters. Some xcof these encounters—whether sought or unexpected—can change the trajectory of our lives. They are decisive encounters. How paramount it is to have an encounter with someone who will be our friend, with whom will be our partner, with people who influence our development and the shaping of our character, among others. However, of all encounters, the most important one is the encounter with Jesus. Throughout history, many people have met Him, and it has been a turning point in their lives.Jesus did not leave anyone unmoved. All the encounters with Him were decisive. In this book, Dr. Roberto Badenas talks about these encounters as well as their distinct nuances recorded in the Scriptures. He conveys to us—vividly and profoundly—the experiences of people whose lives were changed by Jesus, which gives us the desire to experience the same. The story of one decisive encounter is still missing: yours with Jesus. And that one is to be written by you.

A Classic Guide for Christians Who Want to Move from Empty Religion to Authentic Faith
Writing to a friend who was disillusioned by religion, minister and theologian Henry Scougal created what would become a classic text on Christian living. Compassionately explaining what true religion is and isn't, Scougal shares biblical practices that lead to real spiritual transformation.
In The Life of God in the Soul of Man, Scougal cuts through false ideas about religion and demonstrates how to pursue true unity with God. He explains that religion shouldn't be primarily focused on restraining or dictating outward behavior, but living a divine life characterized by faith, a love for God and others, purity, and humility. As it did for the recipient of Scougal's original letter, this book challenges believers to turn from empty religion and allow the Holy Spirit to conform them into Christ's glorious image.

    - Great Resource for Churches and Mentors: Scougal's words uplift disheartened believers and guide them toward true transformation
    - Use as a Devotional for Personal Growth: Recommended for nominal Christians and sincere believers interested in developing authentic faith
    - Approachable Guide to Christian Living: Dives into important topics such as trusting in God's providence, depending on the Holy Spirit, and fighting sin
    - Academic Study Resource: This edited and abridged edition of Scougal's classic work is ideal for use in Bible colleges and seminaries
    - Convenient Repackage of Popular Sermons: Includes a short biography of Henry Scougal and a foreword by theologian Joel R. Beeke

Mary Magdalene's life was transformed when she was healed by Christ and joined his ministry from Galilee to Jerusalem. The Gospels teach that she was also a witness at the cross and the first one sent by Christ to preach his resurrection. Yet her story is often confused, scandalized, and undervalued by the church.

In The Mary We Forgot, award-winning church historian and theologian Jennifer Powell McNutt unpacks Scripture and history to reveal the real Mary Magdalene: the first apostle of the good news and a model of discipleship for both men and women today.

McNutt also invites readers along on her journey through southern France, tracing the path remembered by some church traditions as where Mary Magdalene spread the gospel. Christians will learn from the disciple known as the "apostle to the apostles" how to embrace Jesus's calling to "go and tell" with faith and courage. They'll also be encouraged by the reminder that God calls ordinary, imperfect, and unexpected people to share the good news of Jesus Christ. The hope of remembering Mary Magdalene is ultimately to better know the one to whom she pointed, the risen Christ.
