“Much alarm has been raised among Establishment media and politicians about President Trump’s efforts to cut the federal bureaucracy and to force its top officials to be more loyal to him and to those who voted for him. How did we come to find ourselves in a situation where our top national administrators – who exercise immense governing power in our country – think of themselves as independent of the elected president? Why does it create alarm among our elites when the president expects those running the administrative state to carry out his political program? The roots of this entitled attitude go back many decades, and are part of the original Progressive project to comprehensively reshape American government. We are now in the midst of the first serious effort since the 1930s to restore some measure of democratic accountability to national administration. In this Provocation, Ronald J. Pestritto explains how we got to this moment, and what the prospects are for the current effort to turn things around.”

If I asked you how many Robin Hoods you could name, what would the list be like?

I’m sure you’d reel off a whole host of famous actors, like Errol Flynn, Douglas Fairbanks, Kevin Costner, Michael Praed, Sean Connery, and John Cleese, to name but six. All of these men have played the role of Robin Hood in various television and movie adaptations of the famous story.

But that’s not what I meant.

I’m talking about Robin Hood himself; the ever popular and ever noble outlaw hero who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor, with his trusty bow and arrow as his weapon of choice. The leader of a band of like-minded outlaws, christened the Merry Men (‘merry’ – in this instance – derives from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘illustrious, famous, great, mighty’, etc. In the same sense, Hood means ‘hoodlum, thief, thug, criminal’). Robin Hood was a champion for justice, fighting against the oppression of the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and his right-hand man Guy of Gisbourne, all under the watchful eye of the wicked Prince John (who had been placed on the throne as a substitute monarch whilst his brother, King Richard The Lionheart, fought in the Crusades).

Of course, that was only one Robin Hood. Very much like the various incarnations that have appeared in classic novels, Hollywood movies, television series, radio serials and theatrical plays, Robin Hood was more than one man.

    Manipulation - Influencing...

Manipulation is a form of covert influence where an individual or group uses deceptive tactics to control or alter the behaviors, beliefs, or decisions of others, often without their awareness. This subtle, often underhanded form of influence aims to achieve personal gain or power, typically at the expense of the manipulated party. Understanding the nature of manipulation requires delving into the methods and psychological mechanisms that make it so effective and insidious.
At its core, manipulation is about exerting influence in a way that is not immediately obvious to the target. Unlike more overt forms of control, manipulation operates in the shadows, using psychological tactics to induce desired behaviors or responses. It thrives on exploiting vulnerabilities, uncertainties, and emotional triggers in individuals, often capitalizing on their desires, fears, or insecurities. Manipulators may use a variety of techniques, such as flattery, guilt-tripping, emotional blackmail, and gaslighting, to sway decisions or actions in their favor.
One of the defining characteristics of manipulation is its covert nature. The manipulator often works behind the scenes, creating situations or presenting information in a way that influences the target’s perception of reality. This can lead the victim to make decisions they would not otherwise have made, under the false belief that they are acting independently or in their own best interest. For instance, a manipulative partner may use guilt to convince their significant other to compromise on something they would normally resist. Over time, these manipulative tactics can erode the target's sense of agency and self-worth, making them more susceptible to future manipulation.

    10´Summary HOMO DEUS: A Brief...

    Yuval Noah Harari

In "Homo Deus," Yuval Noah Harari explores the future of humanity and the evolution of societies in the 21st century. Unlike his previous book, "Sapiens," which analyzes humanity's past, "Homo Deus" focuses on what the future might hold, considering technological advancements, artificial intelligence, and new forms of social organization. Harari argues that humanity has largely overcome three fundamental historical problems: famine, plague, and war. However, new challenges have emerged, including the pursuit of immortality, absolute happiness, and the deification of humans.
In "Homo Deus," Harari takes us to a philosophical frontier where humanity must redefine its purpose in a world increasingly dominated by technology and artificial intelligence. Beyond survival and progress, the essential question is: What does it mean to be human when consciousness is no longer exclusive to our species?
The challenge of the 21st century is not just technological but also spiritual: finding a new sense of purpose in a world where human identity is no longer the center of the universe.

We broke our new series on learning Portuguese down into different learning stages. Start with the "Lower Beginner" books followed by the "Beginner" and "Upper Beginner" books. Next, progress to the "Intermediate" series, then test and reinforce your knowledge with the "Conversations" series.
This audiobook is divided into units. While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Portuguese.
In Unit 1 you will hear Portuguese decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Portuguese speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Portuguese. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Portuguese at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Portuguese, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.
In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.
