Beschreibung

The Nursery Rhymes of England is a rich anthology that encapsulates the diverse tapestry of English childhood through its evocative verses and playful rhythms. Compiling traditional nursery rhymes from various regions, this collection not only celebrates the simplicity of childlike wonder but also serves as a crucial cultural artifact, reflecting the socio-historical contexts of 19th-century England. The literary style blends oral traditions with written forms, creating a lyrical interplay that engages young minds while also offering deeper insights into Victorian society, family dynamics, and the evolution of language. The authorship of this anthology is attributed to various contributors, including folklorists and poets who recognized the significance of preserving these ephemeral pieces of oral literature. Their collective efforts represent a longing to document the shared experiences of childhood, illuminating the role of nursery rhymes in fostering imagination and moral lessons. This endeavor emerged from the growing Victorian emphasis on childhood as a distinct phase of life, marked by innocence and the pursuit of education. Recommended for educators, parents, and literary enthusiasts alike, The Nursery Rhymes of England is an invaluable treasure trove that invites readers to rediscover the charm of timeless tales. The collection not only entertains but also serves as an essential resource for understanding cultural heritage, making it a must-have for anyone who wishes to appreciate the nuances of English folklore and its enduring impact on the childhood experience.

I WAS BORN A LAKOTA AND I HAVE LIVED AS A LAKOTA AND I SHALL DIE A LAKOTA.—RED CLOUD

Red Cloud (1822–1909) was a great warrior and chief of the Lakota. Told from his perspective, Red Cloud: A Lakota Story of War and Surrender describes the events that brought him to prominence as a leader of his people and how he came to surrender them to the white man, ending their way of life on the Great Plains.

From the intrusion of white settlers into Lakota territory, to the treaties signed with the U.S. government, and to the many subsequent battles, Red Cloud explains how the Lakota became the only nation to win a war against the U.S. Army on American soil. However, unlike fellow warriors Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, Red Cloud eventually came to accept the inevitable advance of white civilization. He submitted to change and moved his followers onto a reservation.

The story concludes with Red Cloud’s trip to the East Coast, where he visited New York City and met President Ulysses S. Grant.

Author S. D. Nelson reinterprets the nineteenth-century Lakota ledger-art style to give authenticity to the story as he brings to light one of the most controversial members of the Lakota tribe, Red Cloud.

In this stand-alone companion novel to the acclaimed Boy, Everywhere, A. M. Dassu returns to extend the story of Sami’s best friend Ali, who organizes a charity soccer match for their friend Aadam while his whole life is privately unraveling.

After their friend Mark’s mum wins the lottery and gets a giant house with an indoor pool, Ali and Sami have been having the time of their lives hanging at Mark’s house. Even their friend Aadam gets a job there, which means he can make more money for his legal battle for UK residency. But when some money goes missing, Aadam is accused of stealing it—and all three boys are unceremoniously kicked out of Mark’s house in suspicion.

On top of that, Ali’s dad, who abandoned the family when Ali was little, is suddenly turning up everywhere in town, and a half-brother Ali never knew has shown up at Ali’s school. Ali feels miserable and resentful about it, making it hard to be a good friend.

The boys know Aadam is innocent, and if he doesn’t raise thousands of pounds right away, he could get deported back to Syria amidst its civil war. At least Ali has a plan: they’ll host a charity football penalty match to raise money for Aadam so he can stay in the UK.

But can Ali pull together the match—even if he feels his whole life at home is falling apart?

"This tale of boyhood friendship and caring for your community [is] perfect for reluctant readers who want satisfying resolutions, a lot of playing with friends, and relatable characters who provide new insights into the lived experiences of immigrants and refugees."—Booklist
