Synopsis

"Talbot Mundy Biblio" is a comprehensive anthology that delves into the life and works of Talbot Mundy, a prolific author known for his adventure fiction set in exotic locales, particularly in the early 20th century. This collection captures the essence of Mundy's literary style, characterized by rich narrative detail, sweeping prose, and an indelible sense of place, inviting readers to immerse themselves in his meticulously crafted worlds. The anthology contextualizes Mundy's contributions to genre literature, particularly within the realms of imperialism and adventure, while simultaneously illuminating the cultural influences and historical settings that informed his narratives. Talbot Mundy, a contemporary of renowned authors such as Rudyard Kipling and H. Rider Haggard, carved out a unique niche for himself with his distinctive blend of adventure and philosophical musings. His diverse background, which included time spent in British India and extensive travels, significantly influenced his writing, infusing his narratives with authenticity and a deep understanding of the complexities of colonial experiences. "Talbot Mundy Biblio" serves as a fitting tribute to an author whose writings have resonated across generations, yet remain underappreciated in mainstream literary discourse. I highly recommend "Talbot Mundy Biblio" not only to enthusiasts of early 20th-century literature but also to scholars and readers interested in the broader implications of adventure tales in colonial contexts. This anthology not only enriches our understanding of Mundy's oeuvre but also sparks dialogue about the intersections of culture, history, and literature, making it an essential read for those seeking to explore the enduring legacy of this remarkable storyteller.

Alexander Kuprin was born in Narovchat, Penza in Russia on 7th September 1870.
At 3 his Father died and he and mother moved to Moscow. By 10 he was enrolled at the Second Moscow Military High School and there his interest in literature began. The Alexander Military Academy followed and two years later he was a sub-lieutenant and posted to an Infantry Regiment for a further four years.
Despite his duties he was a now a keen writer and published his first short story at this time. His military duties also garnered him experiences for his breakthrough work ‘The Duel’. Leaving the military he left for Kiev to work for local newspapers. He continued to publish both stories and novels and by 1901 he was in St Petersburg becoming part of a group that included Chekhov, Ivan Bunin, Maxim Gorky and Leonid Andreyev.
In the years that followed further controversial works and acclaim followed. His comments on the regime meant he was also put under secret police surveillance.
As World War I erupted, Kuprin opened a military hospital but was then given command of an infantry company in Finland. He was soon discharged on grounds of ill health.
The October Revolution saw him praise Lenin, but he warned that the Bolsheviks threatened Russian culture and might cause further widespread suffering to the peasants. As Civil War raged he took his family to Helsinki and then on to Paris.
Exile saw his talents decline further and his succumbing to alcoholism. He became lonely and withdrawn. The family's poverty increased his malaise.
In May 1937, the Kuprin’s returned to Moscow. He now saw his work published but wrote almost nothing new. In 1938 his health rapidly deteriorated. Already suffering from a kidney problems and sclerosis, he had now developed cancer of the oesophagus.
Alexander Kuprin died on 25th August 1938.

There has never been a definitive, forensically detailed history of Oasis and their music; a book that takes listeners to the heart of the band's work and what lay behind it in the kind of deeply researched, knowledgeable detail that has been afforded The Beatles, perhaps most notably with Ian MacDonald's Revolution In the Head, which examined every Beatles song in chronological detail. The authors' intention is to write the book that satisfies the many millions of fans globally similarly obsessed with Oasis's music, but who currently only have scattered social media pages to turn to add depth to the story. Leading music journalists Hamish MacBain and Ted Kessler deliver the definitive, chronological history of the songs of Oasis that will appeal to fans old and new, in doing so, bringing the wider Oasis story into play in glorious color. The pair have interviewed both Gallaghers dozens of times between 1994 and 2024, and no other journalists can claim more—or more lively—encounters with Liam and Noel. The book will also revisit each interview in the first-person, chronologically throughout, to add unique perspective and texture to the wider story. MacBain and Kessle will also dissect sleeve-art with the designers and photographers, delving into each detail surrounding the band. This is a veritable Oasis treasure trove!

Curry - Eating Reading and Race

No two curries are the same. This Curry asks why the dish is supposed to represent everything brown people eat, read, and do.

Curry is a dish that doesn't quite exist, but, as this wildly funny and sharp essay points out, a dish that doesn't properly exist can have infinite, equally authentic variations. By grappling with novels, recipes, travelogues, pop culture, and his own upbringing, Naben Ruthnum depicts how the distinctive taste of curry has often become maladroit shorthand for brown identity. With the sardonic wit of Gita Mehta's Karma Cola and the refined, obsessive palette of Bill Buford's Heat, Ruthnum sinks his teeth into the story of how the beloved flavor calcified into an aesthetic genre that limits the imaginations of writers, readers, and eaters. Following in the footsteps of Salman Rushdie's Imaginary Homelands, Curry cracks open anew the staid narrative of an authentically Indian diasporic experience.

"Traveling the world with my father, watching him interact with people, famous and ordinary, observing up close his balls-out sense of adventure, and having a larger-than-life personality to live up to had a profound effect on me and the formation of my character." —From the foreword by Steve Aoki, Grammy-nominated producer and Billboard award-winning DJ

Hiroaki "Rocky" Aoki was a man who succeeded in everything he pursued. From wrestling, ballooning, underwater exploration, and car and boat racing to founding Benihana, Rocky's passion for life infected all around him and accelerated the exchange of Japanese culture and cuisine with America. Rocky's rags to riches story, from dishwasher and busboy to owner of a multi-million-dollar restaurant empire, is an American dream realized unlike any other. Running and expanding the business would be all-consuming for most people, but Rocky would not be deterred. His determination for the business rivaled the drive he demonstrated in his other interests, some of which almost killed him. American Hiro by Jack McCallum, who had full access to Rocky Aoki and those in his enterprises, provides the only full inside account of one of the most famous symbols of cultural assimilation and capitalistic zeal in modern United States history—a champion in business, sports, and life.

The inspiring and thrilling combat memoir of the only Army Ranger serving in direct combat operations with a prosthetic limb.On October 3, 2005, Kapacziewski and his soldiers were coming to the end of their tour in Northern Iraq when their convoy was attacked by enemy fighters. A grenade fell through the gunner's hatch and exploded, shattering Kapacziewski's right leg below the knee, damaging his right hip, and severing a nerve and artery in his right arm.He endured more than forty surgeries, but his right leg still wasn't healing as he had hoped, so in March 2007, Kapacziewski chose to have it amputated with one goal in mind: to return to the line and serve alongside his fellow Rangers. One year after his surgery, Kapacziewski accomplished his goal: he was put back on the line, as a squad leader of his Army Ranger Regiment. On April 19, 2010, during his ninth combat deployment (and fifth after losing his leg), Kapacziewski's patrol ran into an ambush outside a village in eastern Afghanistan. After a fellow Ranger fell to withering enemy fire, shot through the belly, Sergeant Kap and another soldier dragged him seventy-five yards to safety and administered first aid that saved his life while heavy machineguns tried to kill them. His actions earned him an Army Commendation Medal with "V" for Valor. He had previously been awarded a Bronze Star for Valor—and a total of three Purple Hearts for combat wounds.Back in the Fight is an inspiring and thrilling tale readers will never forget.
