Beschreibung

Oscar Wilde, Art and Morality: A Defence of 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' delves into the intricate relationship between aestheticism and ethics in Wilde's seminal work. Through a collection of critical essays and scholarly analyses, this book explores the themes of beauty, morality, and the duality of human nature that permeate Wilde's novel. The contributions from various authors contextualize Wilde's exploration of art's role in society and the contentious moral implications that arise from the pursuit of pleasure, making it a significant discourse in Victorian literature and the broader context of literary criticism. The authors contributing to this volume draw upon diverse academic backgrounds, reflecting the multifaceted influences that shaped Wilde's philosophies. Wilde, a prominent figure in the Aesthetic Movement, faced considerable backlash for his views on art and morality, especially in relation to the public scandal surrounding his life. This collection highlights the ongoing relevance of Wilde's insights, revealing how his experiences and intellect contributed to a rich tapestry of thought that challenges the dichotomy of art for art's sake versus its moral responsibilities. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of Wilde's thought and the societal impact of 'The Picture of Dorian Gray.' It invites scholars and enthusiasts alike to engage with the provocative questions of art's influence on morality, making it a crucial addition to the libraries of literary critics, students, and Wilde aficionados.

In 2008, Celeste Mergens was working with an overcrowded orphanage on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, when she learned that menstruating girls sat on cardboard in their rooms for several days each month.

This set into motion a simple idea—combining a washable, long-lasting pad with taboo-breaking education—that became a catalyst for an unlikely global movement for equity.

Written in short, evocative chapters, The Power of Days tells the story of Mergens's quest to rally a global response to elevate menstrual health, increase universal access to menstrual supplies, shatter stigma through education, and advocate for global policy change. Raised in poverty by a mentally ill parent, Mergens learned early on that building the life she wanted would take equal parts determination and humility, traits that led her to create the kinds of inclusive conversations and solutions she is known for around the globe.

The challenges Mergens faced and the lessons she learned, personally and professionally, and the triumphs and resourcefulness of leaders all over the globe are illuminating to all who wish to make a difference and create a more equitable world.

This book delves into genocide in Palestine, and the war crisis in eastern Europe, West Asia and East Asia. It examines the role of the Big Lie in blunting popular opposition, and describes ways countries around the world and the general public are pressing for peace.
The world is in a crisis now. As its empire declines toward collapse, the United States leadership is making a series of disastrous errors. The “neocons” in Washington, DC, are determined to maintain U.S. global domination regardless of what it might take. The stakes are high for them. They seem to believe that if they “allow” any other country to challenge their global leadership, their whole system could fall apart.
So they are prepared to do whatever it takes. Supporting genocide in Israel—by providing weapons, money, and a bizarre “moral justification” for horrific genocidal bombing—is a sign of what it takes. Blowing up the Nord Stream pipeline was another sign of what it can take.
Western European leaders have been rounded up and bludgeoned into a unified NATO alliance against Russia, and in support of Israeli genocide against Palestinians. This alliance—originally composed of “north Atlantic” countries under U.S. leadership at the end of World War II—is now also being extended to Asia. It’s a quest to curb China’s historic economic success, which threatens Western domination of global trade.
A new peace movement is emerging. It faces enormous obstacles, including a gigantic wave of war hysteria engineered in Washington, magnified exponentially by a captive mainstream media that seems to have abandoned all pretense of critical journalistic independence and objectivity. But as facts emerge and truth surfaces, the movement for peace will intensify.
Combined with the horrific results of sanctions and war, these facts and truths can be expected to bring ever greater waves of opposition and resistance into the fray.

A revealing history of the formative period when voices of dissent and innovation defied power and created visions of America still resonant today.

The early decades of the nineteenth century saw the expansion of slavery, Native dispossession, and wars with Canada and Mexico. Mass immigration and powerful religious movements sent tremors through American society. But even as the powerful defended the status quo, others defied it: voices from the margins moved the center; eccentric visions altered the accepted wisdom, and acts of empathy questioned self-interest. Edward L. Ayers’s rich history examines the visions that moved Frederick Douglass, Margaret Fuller, the Native American activist William Apess, and others to challenge entrenched practices and beliefs.

Through decades of award-winning scholarship on the Civil War, Edward L. Ayers has himself ventured beyond the interpretative status quo to recover the range of possibilities embedded in the past as it was lived. Here he turns that distinctive historical sensibility to a period when bold visionaries and critics built vigorous traditions of dissent and innovation into the foundation of the nation. Those traditions remain alive for us today.

"Narrator Roger Davis, who earned first-class honors in media and anthropology, puts his training to good use to lead listeners through 17th- and 18th-century Malagasy history." - Library Journal The final posthumous work by the coauthor of the major New York Times bestseller The Dawn of Everything.Pirates have long lived in the realm of romance and fantasy, symbolizing risk, lawlessness, and radical visions of freedom. But at the root of this mythology is a rich history of pirate societies—vibrant, imaginative experiments in self-governance and alternative social formations at the edges of the European empire. In graduate school, David Graeber conducted ethnographic field research in Madagascar for his doctoral thesis on the island’s politics and history of slavery and magic. During this time, he encountered the Zana-Malata, an ethnic group of mixed descendants of the many pirates who settled on the island at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Pirate Enlightenment, or the Real Libertalia, Graeber’s final posthumous book, is the outgrowth of this early research and the culmination of ideas that he developed in his classic, bestselling works Debt and The Dawn of Everything (written with the archaeologist David Wengrow). In this lively, incisive exploration, Graeber considers how the protodemocratic, even libertarian practices of the Zana-Malata came to shape the Enlightenment project defined for too long as distinctly European. He illuminates the non-European origins of what we consider to be “Western” thought and endeavors to recover forgotten forms of social and political order that gesture toward new, hopeful possibilities for the future.A Macmillan Audio production from Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
