The comedy is set in Athens and revolves around the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and his forthcoming marriage to Hippolyta. However, the play is not simply a love story. It is also a story about the clash between two different worlds: the world of the court and the world of the forest. In the Forest, we find Oberon and Titania, the King and Queen of the Fairies. This recording features Edit Nesbit's adaptation of the Shakespeare's comedy. Read in English, unabridged.

This is a Century for the history books. The Chinese curse of living in interesting times could not be more suited.

A small island continued its expansion across the globe bringing both good and evil in its march. Empires clashed. Revolution shook many. The Industrial Age was upon us.

Poets spoke up against slavery bringing social and political pressure upon an abominable horror. It was also the Age of the Romantics; Shelley, Keats, Byron lyrically rapture. Tennyson, Arnold, Browning rode a century of sweeping change of dynamism and great verse.

This volume of Conor McPherson's collected plays, covering a decade of writing, celebrates a fascination with the uncanny which has led him to be described as 'quite possibly the finest playwright of his generation' (New York Times).
In Shining City, a man seeks help from a counsellor, claiming to have seen the ghost of his dead wife. The play, premiered at the Royal Court, London, is 'up there with The Weir, moving, compassionate, ingenious and absolutely gripping' (Daily Telegraph)
The Seafarer, premiered at the National Theatre before going on to become a Tony Award-winning Broadway hit, tells the story of an extended Christmas Eve card game, but one played for the highest stakes possible. 'McPherson proves yet again he is both a born yarn-spinner and an acute analyst of the melancholy Irish manhood' (Guardian)
Set in 'the big house' in 1820s rural Ireland, The Veil is McPherson's first period play. Seventeen-year-old Hannah is to be married off in order to settle the debts of the crumbling estate. But when Reverend Berkeley arrives, determined to orchestrate a séance, chaos is unleased. 'A cracking fireside tale of haunting and decay' (The Times)
The Birds, hauntingly adapted from the short story by Daphne du Maurier, is 'deliciously chilling, claustrophobic, questioning, frightening; and with a twist' (Irish Independent). It is published here for the first time, as is The Dance of Death, a new version of Strindberg's classic, which premiered at the Trafalgar Studios in London. 'A spectacularly bleak yet curiously bracing drama that often makes you laugh out loud' (Daily Telegraph)
Completing the volume is a Foreword by the author.

    The Poetry of Anne Kingsmill...

Anne Kingsmill was born in April 1661 (an exact date is not known) in Sydmonton, Hampshire.

Throughout her life Anne was involved in several Court cases that dragged on for years. These involved both a share of her parent’s estate for her education and later her and her husband’s share of an inheritance.

In 1682, Anne became a maid of honour to Mary of Modena (wife of James, Duke of York, and later King James II) at St James’s Palace.

Anne's interest in poetry began at the palace, and she started writing her own verse. The Court however was no place for a woman to display any poetic efforts. Women were not considered suitable for such literary pursuits.

At court, Anne met Colonel Heneage Finch. A courtier as well as a soldier. The couple married on 15th May 1684.

The couple's marriage was enduring and happy, in part due to the equality in their partnership. Her poetic skills blossomed as she expressed her love for her husband and the positive effects of his encouragement on her artistic development.

Being staunch Catholics in a changing and volatile Protestant world would bring them many problems to endure. Her husband continued to support her poetry and in 1701 she published ‘The Spleen’ anonymously. This well-received reflection on depression would prove to be her most popular poem. However, it also revealed the continuing and mounting problem of her own frequent depressions.

When ‘Miscellany Poems, on Several Occasions’ was published in 1713, the cover of the first edition stated that the works were "Written by a Lady." On subsequent printings, she received credit as Anne, Countess of Winchelsea.

Anne Kingsmill-Finch, Countess of Winchilsea died in Westminster on 5th August 1720.
