Synopsis

From the vibrant streets of Paris to the pulsating heart of Port-au-Prince, *The Shadow We Leave Behind: A Song of Inheritance* weaves a captivating tale of family secrets, historical injustice, and the enduring power of cultural memory.  Nadège Lafontant, a Haitian-born investigative journalist thriving in her Parisian life, is haunted by a persistent echo of her homeland.  A faded letter, unearthed from a forgotten heirloom, shatters her carefully constructed world, revealing a legacy of stolen land in Haiti, lost not through a willing sale, but under the shadow of the US occupation.Compelled by a journalist's instinct and a yearning to reclaim her family's history, Nadège returns to Port-au-Prince, a city both familiar and foreign.  Her Parisian accent and Westernized demeanor mark her as an outsider, her inquiries met with suspicion in a community wary of outsiders dredging up old wounds.  Her only guide is her estranged cousin, Malia Joseph, a Vodou priestess deeply rooted in Haitian traditions, whose spiritual wisdom challenges Nadège's skepticism and slowly erodes the walls she's built around her heart.Their investigation leads them not to dusty archives, but to a collection of seemingly simple Haitian folk songs, passed down through generations. Within these melodies lie coded narratives, fragments of a deliberately obscured past. Each deciphered lyric, each symbolic image, reveals a piece of Toussaint Charlemagne's story—Nadège’s great-grandfather, whose life intertwined with the tumultuous backdrop of the American occupation. As Nadège and Malia delve deeper, they uncover a web of deceit spun by Jean-Baptiste Dupré, a powerful businessman who now owns the land that once belonged to Nadège’s family.  His wealth, built on the dispossession of families like hers, becomes a symbol of the enduring wounds of colonialism.  Unraveling his web of lies becomes crucial to reclaiming not just their land, but their family's legacy.Their pursuit of justice is fraught with peril, forcing them to rely on their combined strengths—Nadège's investigative skills and Malia's deep connection to Haitian culture and spirituality.  The songs, once fragmented memories, become a roadmap to the truth, revealing Toussaint’s courageous resistance against the occupation and guiding them to the irrefutable evidence they need to confront Dupré and reclaim their stolen inheritance.

Amelia Ann Blanford Edwards was born on 7th June 1831 in Islington, London. She was educated at home by her mother and showed early promise as a writer, publishing her first poem at the age of 7 and her first story at 12. Thereafter several popular periodicals published her poetry, stories and articles.
In addition she also illustrated some of her own writings and painted scenes from books she had read. This talent was not supported by her parents, who saw an artist’s life as scandalous. Undeterred Amelia took up composing and performing music until a bout of typhus caused throat damage. Other interests soon followed until, early in the 1850s, Amelia focused exclusively on writing. Her early novels were well received, and with ‘Barbara's History’ in 1864, a work revolving around bigamy, her reputation was established.
Amelia’s pen was also the purveyor of ghost stories for magazines and are still anthologized as classic tales to this day.
In January 1851, Amelia became engaged, apparently to please her parents, but she quickly broke it off. In reality her emotional attachments were almost exclusively with women. From the early 1860s she lived with Ellen Drew Braysher, a widow 27 years her senior, until both women died in early 1892. During this relationship other women also entered and left her life. Her frequent travelling companion, Lucy Renshaw, accompanied her to Egypt in the winter of 1873 and there she found a life-changing interest in Egyptology. Aware of increasing threats from tourism and modern development she became an advocate for their research and preservation.
To advance the work Amelia largely abandoned much of her writing in favour of Egyptology and even took on strenuous lecture tours to raise funds.
After catching influenza, Amelia Edwards, ‘the Godmother of Egyptology’ died on 15th April 1892 at Weston-super-Mare. She was 60.

A classic fantasy novel. Part three in the series The legend of Amornia. With a sense of déjà vu, Agnes packed her things. She was going to be staying with her grandmother in Hova again. She picked up her fully packed suitcase and as she started to go downstairs the thoughts began running through her head. It was as if something was missing, something she ought to remember. Something hideously black. But for the life of her she couldn’t remember what.In the top of the tower on the smaller of the islands that made up the Samloqs sat that night’s watch. He looked up at the starry sky through the opening that was the tower’s only window – and there, something was there. A giant black shadow swooped past and blocked out the light. The preacher shuddered. The next moment he almost fell out of the tower. The creature high above him had turned, revealing an enormous pair of wings and clouds of sooty black smoke billowing from its nostrils.Naz-Halham could not erase the Sibyl’s words from his mind. “The time is come when I, Moros, shall rise and break my bonds. I enjoin upon thee to ally thyself with the people from the sea, whose arrival in Amornia has been prophesied since before my sisters and brothers fettered my person with their treacherous chains.”The return of the silver dragon is the third volume in the Tales of Amornia series. The first two volumes, The secret of the stone bridge and The crimson sceptre, have earned both public and critical praise. “A classic portal fantasy that’s aflame with storytelling glee, mystique, thrills and loveable characters” is one of many positive reviews that have been written.

In post-WWII London, the matchmakers of The Right Sort Marriage Bureau are involved in yet another murder.

In the immediate post-war days of London, two unlikely partners have undertaken an even more unlikely business venture—The Right Sort Marriage Bureau. The two partners are Miss Iris Sparks, a woman with a dangerous—and never discussed—past in British intelligence and Mrs. Gwendolyn Bainbridge, a genteel war widow with a young son entangled in a complicated aristocratic family. Looking to throw a New Year's Eve soiree for their clients, Sparks and Bainbridge scout an empty building—only to find a body contained in the walls. What they initially assume is a victim of the recent Blitz is uncovered instead to be a murder victim—stabbed several times.

To make matters worse, the owner of the building is Sparks's beau, Archie Spelling, who has ties to a variety of enterprises on the right and wrong sides of the law, and the main investigator for the police is her ex-fiancé. Gwen, too, is dealing with her own complicated love life, as she tentatively steps back into the dating pool for the first time since her husband's death. Murder is not something they want to add to their plates, but the murderer may be closer to home than is comfortable, and they must do all they can to protect their clients, their business, and themselves.
