Kahlil Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu.
Sand and Foam is a book of aphorisms, poems, and parables by the author of "The Prophet" - a philosopher at his window commenting on the scene passing below.
In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In modern Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.

Finally, a philosophy book that doesn't take itself as seriously as the theorists it eviscerates! "Nothing Means Anything" mercilessly skewers postmodernism's most pretentious thinkers with savage wit and zero academic mercy.
Journey through the impenetrable jargon, circular logic, and breathtaking hypocrisy of French intellectuals who made careers out of stating the obvious in the most confusing way possible. From Derrida's word games to Foucault's paranoid power trips, from Baudrillard's reality-denial to Lyotard's grand narrative about the end of grand narratives, this book translates postmodern gobbledygook into hilarious plain English.
Whether you're a traumatized humanities student seeking revenge on the theorists who destroyed your GPA, a curious reader wondering what all the fuss is about, or just someone who enjoys watching pretentious nonsense get thoroughly roasted, this irreverent guide delivers. You'll learn how to sound profound while saying absolutely nothing, why your IKEA catalog is more meaningful than your actual life, and how to win any argument by claiming everything is a "discourse" (don't forget the air quotes).
Warning: Reading this book in public may cause uncontrollable snorting, concerned looks from strangers, and a weird sense of relief that someone finally said what we've all been thinking about these turtleneck-wearing, cigarette-smoking harbingers of intellectual doom. May cause spontaneous clarity and the disturbing realization that these insufferable French people might occasionally have been right about something.

    John Brown - A Biography

Few figures are more seminal in the abolitionist movement in America than John Brown. His firebrand approach to the movement arose out of his religiously inspired and deep-seated belief that slavery was not only morally unjust but that its removal from American society could only be achieved through armed insurrection. Following his capture in 1859 during an unsuccessful raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry and his subsequent hanging he became an electrifying and symbolical figure for the abolitionist movement. Many historians argue that the incident at Harpers Ferry was the breaking point between pro and anti-slavery forces that led to the secession of the southern states and the subsequent Civil War.
Prominent African American W. E. B. Du Bois chronicles the life of John Brown in this 1909 biography. In the words of Du Bois, John Brown was "a man whose leadership lay not in his office, wealth or influence, but in the white flame of his utter devotion to an ideal." This audio edition is skillfully narrated by J. Keith Jackson, and includes a chronology of John Brown's life.

The fall of the Han Dynasty marked the end of one of China’s longest and most influential imperial reigns, setting the stage for the chaotic period of the Three Kingdoms. While the dynasty had enjoyed centuries of stability and prosperity, internal corruption, weak leadership, and external rebellions steadily eroded its power. By the late second century AD, the once-mighty Han court was little more than a battleground for rival factions, warlords, and opportunists seeking to seize control.
One of the first major signs of decline was the increasing corruption within the imperial court. Eunuchs, who had gained substantial influence over the young emperors, manipulated state affairs for personal gain. As these power struggles intensified, competent officials and generals were sidelined or purged, leaving the empire vulnerable to both internal unrest and external threats. The weakening of central authority allowed regional governors and warlords to act with growing independence, further fragmenting the empire.
Amidst this political turmoil, a major peasant uprising erupted in 184 AD—the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Led by Zhang Jue, a Taoist healer who promised salvation through divine intervention, the rebellion quickly spread across northern and central China, drawing hundreds of thousands of followers. Although the Han government eventually crushed the revolt, the effort severely drained the empire’s resources and exposed its inability to maintain control. The rebellion’s suppression also elevated the status of military commanders, many of whom would later become the powerful warlords who divided the empire.
