Synopsis

King Coal by Upton Sinclair is a gripping and socially charged novel that exposes the harsh realities of labor exploitation in the early 20th-century American coal industry. Published in 1917, this powerful work continues Sinclair's tradition of blending compelling storytelling with bold social critique, shining a light on economic injustice and the human cost of industrial greed.

The novel follows Hal Warner, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman, who disguises his identity and ventures into the coal mines of Colorado to experience firsthand the lives of immigrant workers. Motivated by curiosity and idealism, Hal seeks to understand the struggles of laborers who toil under dangerous and dehumanizing conditions. What he discovers is a world dominated by corporate control, oppressive company towns, unsafe working environments, and a system designed to suppress workers' rights and voices.

Through Hal's journey, Sinclair presents a vivid portrait of the miners' daily hardships—long hours underground, constant threat of injury or death, inadequate wages, and the ever-present power of mine owners who control not only employment but housing, supplies, and local law enforcement. The novel explores themes of class division, economic inequality, and the awakening of social conscience as Hal becomes increasingly aware of the deep injustices embedded within the industrial system.

Sinclair does not shy away from depicting the tension between labor organizers and powerful corporations. The struggle for unionization and fair treatment becomes a central thread, reflecting real historical conflicts that shaped America's labor movement. Through emotional intensity and detailed realism, the story examines the moral responsibilities of individuals within unjust systems and the courage required to demand change.

At its heart, King Coal is both a narrative of personal transformation and a broader indictment of unchecked capitalism. It challenges readers to confront uncomfortable truths about wealth, power, and the human toll of profit-driven enterprise. Sinclair's vivid prose and passionate advocacy create a novel that is as informative as it is compelling.

A landmark of American social protest literature, King Coal remains a relevant and thought-provoking exploration of labor rights, corporate power, and the enduring fight for dignity in the workplace.

This is the original ‘Buck Rogers’ SF classic. Thrill to the adventures of Anthony "Buck" Rodgers is one of the most celebrated characters in the history of science fiction. Famed in comic strips, television, in movies, and even radio, this is the first novel to introduce Buck Rogers to the reading public. In Armageddon – 2419 A.D., Buck, a victim of accidental suspended animation, awakens five hundred years later to discover America groaning under the tyranny of the villainous Han, ruling from the safety of their armored machine-cities. Falling in love with one of America's new warrior-women, Wilma Deering, Rogers soon become a central figure in using new fangled scientific weapons – disintegrators, jumping belts, inertron, and paralysis rays – to revolt against the Han. 'Nuff said. Adventure awaits!!!!! (This book has no redeeming cultural value. Neither does it's sequel, where the dastardly Han get what is coming to them)

    The spark of war
The separation of Lovers by oceans and seas isolates a vulnerable king. Those are the words haunting Augustus at night. Five months at Court have proven that Selene was worth leaving the pirate fleet for, even if he no longer knows who he is. But fate intervenes again, and Selene disappears at the hands of an old enemy. Now, Augustus must plunge into a war that will determine the fate of the Triarius fleet.
    The chains of fate

Dimitrios never planned to seek the Perean throne, let alone have his fate held hostage. Until the inquisitor names him king, Perean is too exposed--its people vulnerable and its enemies circling. Isolated in a foreign land and the Lovers lost to the seas, Dimitrios must seek new allies. But as a king without a crown, he has little to offer and no way to keep his people safe.

This captivating historical thriller brings back Marian Sutro, ex–special operations agent, and traces her romantic and political exploits in post–World War II London, where the Cold War is about to reshape old loyalties.
As Allied forces close in on Berlin in spring 1945, a solitary figure emerges from the wreckage that is Germany. It is Marian Sutro, whose existence was last known to her British controllers in autumn 1943 in Paris. One of a handful of surviving agents of the Special Operations Executive, she has withstood arrest, interrogation, incarceration, and the horrors of Ravensbrück concentration camp, but at what cost?
Returned to an England she barely knows and a postwar world she doesn’t understand, Marian searches for something on which to ground the rest of her life. Family and friends surround her, but she is haunted by her experiences and by the guilt of knowing that her contribution to the war effort helped lead to the monstrosities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. When the mysterious Major Fawley, the man who hijacked her wartime mission to Paris, emerges from the shadows to draw her into the ambiguities and uncertainties of the Cold War, she sees a way to make amends for the past and at the same time to find the identity that has never been hers.
A novel of divided loyalties and mixed motives, Tightrope is the complex and enigmatic story of a woman whose search for personal identity and fulfillment leads her to shocking choices.
