A century ago, the great powers of Europe became engulfed in what was then called the Great War. The modern U.S. Army, capable of conducting industrialized warfare on a global scale, can trace its roots to the World War. Although the war's outbreak in August 1914 shocked most Americans, they preferred to keep the conflict at arm's length. In April 1917, the president, out of diplomatic options, asked Congress to declare war on Germany. The president ordered nearly 400,000 National Guardsmen into federal service, and more than twenty-four million men eventually registered for the Selective Service, America's first conscription since the Civil War. By the end of 1918, the Army had grown to four million men and had trained 200,000 new officers to lead them. The United States will never forget the American soldiers who fought and died in the World War. To this day, memorials to their sacrifice can be found across America, and the date of the armistice has become a national holiday honoring all those who serve in defense of the nation. Elizabeth Corbett

Elizabeth Burgoyne Corbett was born on the 16th August 1846 at Standishgate, near Wigan. 
After a good education she worked as a journalist for the Newcastle Daily Chronicle and went on to become a widespread and popular writer of adventure and society novels. 
As a feminist writer it is a little bizarre that she published as Mrs George Corbett.  Her most ardent feminist work was ‘New Amazonia: A Foretaste of the Future,’ though other of her works were also similarly themed and dealt with one of the great issues of the day in Victorian society. 
She married George Corbett in Sheffield in 1868.  They went on to have 4 children, of which only 3 survived. 
As a writer she was not overly prolific but was perhaps most admired for her female detectives.  During her literary career Detective books were all the rage and authors of both sexes attempted to bring new and unusual angles of characters and narratives before the voracious public.   
Corbett’s first was in a collection of short stories ‘Adventures of a Lady Detective featuring Dora Bell'.  A later novel introduced a further detective in the guise of Annie Cory. 
Elizabeth Corbett died on in 1930.

Carrying a six-shooter that he called “the gun that tamed the West”, Masterson was involved in several duels and shootouts, much of which was embellished during the early 20th century when he became a newspaper columnist and was given a chance to frame anecdotes about the frontier days and talk about colorful characters like Doc Holliday. He was a lawman, but he had no problem straddling both sides of it.
