Synopsis

Ugo Ojetti (1871-1946), a writer, journalist, and art critic, was one of the most interesting protagonists of Italian culture in the first half of the twentieth century. From his essay Alla scoperta dei letterati (1895), we have selected the Colloqui con Gabriele D’Annunzio, which constitute one of its most interesting chapters. These are precious pages that present us with the figure of a young D’Annunzio, who at thirty-two was already one of the leading figures on the Italian literary and cultural scene; a D’Annunzio who had risen to prominence in the intellectual and social environment of a Rome that had recently become the capital, where his refined and communicative style, his worldview, and the central core of his poetics were already being fully forged. He had already published some of his greatest masterpieces, including Il piacere, which had guaranteed him great literary success, and was about to publish Le vergini delle rocce. This was a D’Annunzio who still had a long way to go in what would prove to be a tumultuous, passionate, adventurous life, studded with successes, loves, military exploits, and revolutionary experiences. As D’Annunzio himself states in these conversations with Ojetti, “The new Renaissance will therefore have to begin by re-establishing the cult of Man. And the new artists, like the old ones, will ask science for the faculty to create: that is, to continue Nature, to add to Nature higher souls and nobler forms, to manifest the Ideal through luminous signs”.

From a prizewinning journalist, Mary Carter Bishop, a moving and beautifully rendered memoir about the half-brother she didn’t know existed that hauntingly explores family, class, secrets, and fate.
Applying for a passport as an adult, Mary Carter Bishop made a shocking discovery. She had a secret half-brother. Her mother, a farm manager’s wife on a country estate, told Mary Carter the abandoned boy was a youthful ""mistake"" from an encounter with a married man. There’d been a home for unwed mothers; foster parents; an orphanage.
Nine years later, Mary Carter tracked Ronnie down at the barbershop where he worked, and found a near-broken man—someone kind, and happy to meet her, but someone also deeply and irreversibly damaged by a life of neglect and abuse at the hands of an uncaring system. He was also disfigured because of a rare medical condition that would eventually kill him, three years after their reunion. During that window, Mary Carter grew close to Ronnie, and as she learned more about him she became consumed by his story. How had Ronnie’s life gone so wrong when hers had gone so well? How could she reconcile the doting, generous mother she knew with a woman who could not bring herself to acknowledge her own son?
Digging deep into her family’s lives for understanding, Mary Carter unfolds a sweeping story of religious intolerance, poverty, fear, ambition, class, and social expectations. Don’t You Ever is a modern Dickensian tale about a child seemingly cursed from birth; a woman shattered by guilt; a husband plagued by self-doubt; a prodigal daughter whose innocence was cruelly snatched away—all living in genteel central Virginia, a world defined by extremes of rural poverty and fabulous wealth.
A riveting memoir about a family haunted by a shameful secret, Don’t You Ever is a powerful story of a woman’s search for her long-hidden sibling, and the factors that profoundly impact our individual destinies.

As adventurers from around the world raced to reach the South Pole and achieve other polar firsts in the early 1900s, outsider Ernest Shackleton and his motley expeditions would outshine even the British navy, becoming icons of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Known for prizing loyalty, leadership, and skill without regard for rank or social class - and for bringing men back alive - Shackleton completed three death-defying Antarctic journeys. Called the Boss by his crew and Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton by the king, the Anglo-Irish explorer counted it all part of life's grand adventure.

Shirley Temple remains the most famous child star of all time, but even this designation fails to reflect the magnitude of her popularity during the era in which she worked. While it is true that she was not the first child actor to reach Hollywood fame, she was the first - and to this day, perhaps the only - star who rose to the very pinnacle of the Hollywood elite before she even turned 10 years old. For this reason, it is no exaggeration to view Shirley as the progenitor for all of the child actors that succeeded her. Not only was Shirley a film star, but she had a monumental impact on a generation of children who grew up during the Great Depression, with her plucky optimism emotionally uplifting an American public struggling both financially and emotionally. She was not only a young actress but also a brand name, someone who offered fathers and mothers hope for their children to achieve the same success as the famous child star.
In many ways, Judy Garland’s rise to fame seems almost predestined. Not only was she a national sensation at a young age, but her parents and sisters were all vaudeville entertainers. However, Garland is better known today for her demise than anything else, and there’s no denying that one of the most fascinating (and tragic) aspects of her life story is the manner in which her downward spiral occurred with the same rapid progression as her meteoric ascent.
Alongside Shirley Temple and Judy Garland, with whom he acted in a series of films, Mickey Rooney was one of America’s most beloved child stars during the 1930s. Rooney had already made his mark in A Family Affair (1937), but he was the face of the incredibly successful Andy Hardy series, which produced several box office hits and featured Rooney in 13 movies, several alongside Judy Garland. At the same time, the fact that the peak of his success came when he was so young has helped obscure the fact that he acted in 10 different decades.
