Delving deep into an intricate web of unlikely heroes, power struggles, and living legends, Elephants in the Hourglass takes listeners on an extraordinary journey of discovery. In her nonfiction debut, Kim Frank blends personal narrative, vivid descriptions, and meticulous research as she illuminates the ways we seek to survive on our rapidly changing planet.

Kim is a female explorer who found her life completely changed as she was drawn deeper and deeper into the plight of the remarkable Asian elephant. For Kim, once she learned about the intense, multi-faceted, but little-known conflict between humans and elephants in North India, she was unable to rest until she had learned more and told this story to the outside world. This was a place and topic totally unknown to her. Up until that point, Kim was an ordinary mom and emerging writer. After a fraught divorce, she felt a need to recapture her own voice and expand her world, and so she set out to the Himalaya with the goal of telling a story worthy of National Geographic. What Kim experienced would change her life. Filled with unforgettable characters and encounters with one of the most sensitive, intelligent, and awe-inspiring creatures on the planet, Elephants in the Hourglass will inspire listeners to pursue their goals and be a force for change in unexpected places.

Have you ever wondered where horse milk vodka comes from? Or how to fight off a mob of Malaysian monkeys? Is it bad luck to wash cow poop off of your shoe? Travel vicariously with Sam across the Orient to find the funny but true answers.
Sam savors every local culture he encounters much like Conan O’Brian and the late Anthony Bourdain—embracing the people, their food, and especially their curiosities. His humor and infatuation with humanity’s diversity fuel each story.
Teaching in Korea and Vietnam since 2015, Sam uses his time out of the classroom to explore the rest of Asia. His five-book series, Itchy Feet Travel Tales in Asia, covers his adventures (and misadventures) in Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Russia, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam.
These stories of the sublime and the surreal will have you giggling and gawking as you follow Sam through the weird and wonderful world of the East.

This is the audiobook of Part 1 of my memoir, My Amazing 35 Year Journey Abroad. I open the book at a time in my life when I was living in an unheated garage in the dead of winter in Chicago and that came about because of my alcoholism. The year was 1981 and I was 28 years old. By this time in my life I had been kicked out of college, fired from 2 jobs including being fired by my father for crashing my company car drunk, divorced once with another one on the way, and I was broke and jobless. I would then pick myself up and brush myself off and get hired as a stockbroker by Dean Witter Reynolds. I would then blow that great opportunity by, you guessed it, abusing alcohol, and after working for 3 different brokerage houses, I would then quit drinking, start my modeling career, take an inadvertent 1 week ski trip to Austria, and then decide not to get on that return flight to Chicago, but instead would take a train from innsbruck to Nice, France where I would work as a model and actor, and then after a few months in Nice, I would move to Paris where I would live for 6 or so months, and then because of a suggestion from a photographer during a job there, I would end up flying to Singapore where I would work as a model and actor there, then after about 6 months there, I would end up moving to NYC to study acting and work as an actor there, and during my day job, I worked as a skate guard at Rockefeller Center where I would work with LIberace during his show there celebrating the skating rinks 50th birthday and there are photos in the book to prove it. Then from NYC I would move to Hong Kong where I would work as a featured actor in 4 movies, including a role in Kickboxer. I would then move to Bangkok, Thailand where I would start my nudie photography career and become the most prolifice photographer of naked Asian girls in the world. It is now 2024 and I am still in Thailand, retired here at the age of 70.
