In January 1900, galvanised by the daring of the Boers in taking on imperial Britain, the young Russian officer Yevgeny Avgustus set off for the Transvaal to fight in the Anglo-Boer War. Like most of the foreign volunteers who flocked to the Boer cause, he ended up on the Natal front.
Avgustus and his companions joined the Krugersdorp Commando, and their experiences in the field are portrayed in vivid detail. The central part of this gripping account covers the Battle of the Tugela Heights in February 1900 and the Boers' subsequent
retreat. The immediacy of Avgustus's writing captures his trepidation and excitement as he approaches the battlefield for the first time, as well as his experience of life on commando.
The keen eye of this foreign volunteer brings to life a turning point in South African history. Avgustus is a gifted writer, and his narrative offers both acute observation and thoughtful
    introspection.
A gripping portrayal of human frailty and courage in the face of mortal danger, A Russian on Commando highlights both the strange attraction and the absurdities of war.

Bad Things - The Nature and...

Bad Things addresses various philosophical questions about the nature and moral relevance of harm. The most basic question is this: under what conditions does an event harm a given individual? Neil Feit focuses primarily on the metaphysics of harm, and he both defends and extends the counterfactual comparative account of harm. On this account, in its most basic form, an act or event harms an individual provided that she would have been better off if it had not occurred. The counterfactual comparative account is widely accepted but also widely criticized. Feit provides detailed and thorough responses to the most challenging objections. He argues that an adequate theory of harm should entail the counterfactual comparative account but also make room for a certain kind plural harm, where two or more events together harm an individual although neither one by itself is harmful. These harmful events are bad things, collectively, even if no single event is itself a bad thing. Feit sets out and defends a detailed account of plural harm, addressing issues about the magnitude and the time of the harm suffered by the victim. The primary focus of the book is on the metaphysics of harm, but issues concerning its normative or moral relevance are addressed.

Imperialism has shaped the course of world history, influencing politics, economics, culture, and warfare across centuries. At its core, imperialism refers to the policy or ideology by which a state extends its rule over other territories, often through military conquest, economic dominance, or political influence. Empires have risen and fallen throughout history, leaving behind legacies that continue to shape modern societies. This chapter explores the fundamental characteristics of imperialism, its driving forces, and its historical significance.
An empire typically consists of a dominant power that exerts control over vast regions, governing diverse populations with varying degrees of autonomy. While military conquest has historically been a primary means of expansion, economic incentives and ideological justifications have also played crucial roles in the formation of empires. The pursuit of wealth, resources, and trade routes has often motivated imperial ambitions, as seen in the European colonial empires that sought to control lucrative markets across the world. Political and strategic concerns, such as securing borders or maintaining dominance over rivals, have further fueled imperial expansion.
Cultural and ideological factors have also been significant in the spread of empires. Many imperial powers have justified their expansion by claiming to bring civilization, religion, or superior governance to the territories they conquered. The Roman Empire, for example, promoted the spread of Roman law and culture as a means of integrating conquered peoples. Similarly, European colonial empires often framed their dominance as a "civilizing mission," using religion and education as tools to reshape local societies. However, such justifications often masked exploitative economic and political systems that benefited the ruling powers at the expense of the subjugated populations.
