Synopsis

THE LORD OF THE RINGS
THE ULTIMATE TRIVIA AND CURIOUS FACTS COLLECTION

CREATED BY TRIVIA HUB

The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, originally intended as a sequel to The Hobbit. The story, set in Middle-earth, follows the quest to destroy the One Ring, created by the Dark Lord Sauron, who is the main antagonist. The narrative is seen primarily through the eyes of the hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin, who are aided by the wizard Gandalf and other members of the Fellowship. Though often called a trilogy, it was meant to be a single volume. The work has had a huge impact on fantasy literature, popular culture, and has been adapted into various forms like radio, film and video games.

CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

The Lord of the Rings was initially intended to be a single volume work, but was published in three volumes for economic reasons. The three volumes were released over the course of a year, from 1954 to 1955.

The title refers to the main antagonist, the Dark Lord Sauron, who created the One Ring to try and rule Middle-earth. The story follows the quest to destroy this ring.

J.R.R. Tolkien considered The Lord of the Rings to be a "heroic romance," rather than a novel. This is a distinction that he felt was important.

The work includes over 60 poems of different genres, which scholars see as essential to the fiction's aesthetics and themes. These poems add information not given in the prose and bring out characters and their backgrounds.

Tolkien used his own maps of Middle-earth as a guide while writing, ensuring that the story's elements fit together in time and space. However, only the maps and the inscription on the Ring were included in the first edition.
