Ethnomusicology is the study of music within its cultural and social contexts. Unlike traditional musicology, which often focuses on musical structures, compositions, and theories, ethnomusicology examines music as a human activity that reflects the beliefs, values, and traditions of the societies that create and sustain it. The scope of ethnomusicology is vast, encompassing diverse musical practices from indigenous chants and ritualistic drumming to contemporary global fusion genres. This field does not limit itself to non-Western or folk traditions but extends to all forms of music, including popular and classical traditions from different regions. One of the key principles of ethnomusicology is fieldwork, which involves immersive participation, interviews, and direct observation of musical traditions within their native environments. Through this hands-on approach, scholars can capture the lived experiences of musicians, the meaning behind musical performances, and the social structures that support musical expression.
Historically, ethnomusicology emerged as a formal discipline in the early twentieth century, evolving from earlier efforts to document and categorize world music traditions. Scholars such as Jaap Kunst, Alan Lomax, and Bruno Nettl contributed significantly to the development of the field, advocating for the study of music in its broader cultural and historical context.
