Synopsis

Last Orders is an exciting and thrilling anthology of short crime fiction, featuring the return of Edinburgh investigator Gus Dury. In the title story Dury receives a mysterious letter on expensive paper but is hesitant to take the case - but he needs the cash, though there's something about his well-heeled client that doesn't sit quite right.
Meanwhile a low-life drug-dealer has a sudden change of heart as he takes revenge on his cheating partner in 'London Calling'.
A victim of high school date rape settles the score, the crew of a bank job suspect that one of their number tipped off the police and so take their grisly retribution and a performance-enhanced bodybuilder loses control with bloody consequences in just some of the stories featured in this original collection by Irvine Welsh's 'favourite British crime writer', Tony Black.

When Ricki is invited to appear on a new talk show to promote her latest book, she declines, of course. After coming face-to-face with a killer while working on her first case, all she wants is to go back to living a normal life, and that doesn't include public appearances. But her agent insists that she does the interview.
On the day of the show, the host turns up missing and Ricki was the last person to see her alive.
Once again, Ricki finds herself investigating a murder. This time, things are personal. Old friends and lovers come back into her life. A saboteur lurks in shadow, wreaking havoc on her career. Things look bad for Ricki unless she can find the real murderer before she's accused of a crime she didn't commit.

A couple's new life in Lisbon unravels in this heady and unsettling psychological thriller from one of Spain's most celebrated writers.

A man travels to Lisbon ahead of his wife to prepare their new home, while she stays in New York to oversee a research project on the neuroscience of memory and fear. Leaving behind a phase of their relationship indelibly marked by 9/11, the man revels in the Portuguese capital's temperate weather and the neighborhood's calmness, meticulously planning the details of their future.

Yet beneath the peace and quiet of this routine, he feels a growing unease he can't explain. Is it the similarity between the two cities, and the two apartments? A mysterious threat waiting in the wings?

A brilliant, deceptively simple novel of psychological suspense, Your Steps on the Stairs explores how our emotions and memories shape our perception of reality. With his subtle, masterful style, Antonio Muñoz Molina lays bare the fragility of the stories we so carefully craft about ourselves.

A serial killer is on the loose, going round strangling women with their own tights and removing their right shoes. Various suspects turn up but, with no obvious motive, the police are impotent and the murders continue. The only link they can find concerns a ‘religious’ meeting, regularly held at the local civic centre, which was attended by at least two of the victims.Amateur detective Samantha Powers is dating Jack Parkinson who, it transpires, is seeing another woman behind her back. He comes under suspicion when that young woman becomes another victim of the strangler as it seems he was the last one to see her alive. There are other suspects, including a vicious, depraved copper and a creepy vicar. As the story unravels, the real culprit remains hidden until almost the last page.

No one innocent. No one free. Nothing sacred.

After a decade of exile precipitated by the tragic death of his mother, Will Seems returns home from Richmond to rural Southside Virginia, taking a job as deputy sheriff in a landscape given way to crime and defeat. Impoverished and abandoned, this remote land of tobacco plantations, razed forests, and boardedup homes seems stuck in the past in a state that is trying to forget its complex history and move on.

Will’s efforts to go about his life are wrecked when a mysterious, brutal homicide claims the life of an old friend, Tom Janders, forcing Will to face the true impetus for his return: not to honor his mother’s memory, but to pay a debt to a Black friend who, in an act of selfless courage years ago, protected Will and suffered permanent disfigurement for it.

Meanwhile, a man Will knows to be innocent is arrested for Tom’s murder, and despite Will’s pleas, his boss seems all too content to wrap up the case. Will must weigh his personal guilt against his public duty when the local Black community hires Bennico Watts, an unpredictable private detective from Richmond, to help him find the real killer. It would seem an ideal pairing—she has experience, along with plenty of sand, and Will is privy to the details of the case—but it doesn’t takelong for either to realize they much prefer to operate alone.

Bennico and Will clash as they each defend their untraditional ways on a wild ride that wends deep into the Snakefoot, an underworld wilderness that for hundreds of years has functioned as a hideout for outcasts—the forgotten and neglected and abused—leaving us enmeshed in the tangled history of a region and its people that leaves no one innocent, no one free, nothing sacred.

“Set deep in the rural expanse of southern Virginia, it’s both a thriller and a dark fairy tale, filled with danger and menace, loss and longed-for redemption."—Megan Abbott
