Beschreibung

Villages are full of tales: some are forgotten while others become a part of local folklore. But the fortunes of one West Country village are watched over and irreversibly etched into history as an omniscient, somewhat crabby, presence keeps track of village life.
In the late sixties a Californian musician blows through Underhill and writes a set of haunting folk songs that will earn him a cult following. Two decades later, some teenagers disturb a body on the local golf course. In 2019, a pair of lodgers discover a one-eyed rag doll hidden in the walls of their crumbling home. Connections are forged and broken across generations, but only the landscape itself can link them together. A landscape threatened by property development and speckled by the pylons whose feet have been buried across the moor.
Tom Cox's masterful debut novel synthesises his passion for music, nature and folklore into a psychedelic and enthralling exploration of village life and the countryside that sustains it.

"Beware false prophets in sheep clothes—they can be hungry wolves." (Lay Pastor Eddie Red Horse reading from Matt 7:15)

An old silversmith's body is dumped along the highway and Legal Services Investigator Charlie Yazzie isn't content to stand by while the FBI and Tribal look for clues—not when he sees his friends Thomas Begay and Harley Ponyboy sucked into a tightening web of evil.

When a beautiful stranger knocks on Harley's door the game changes . . . and so do Harley's loyalties. One thing is clear in this chilling new addition to Chappell's Navajo Nation mystery series—a spate of murders and an outlier with a deadly agenda—should be warning enough for anyone.

A garden bathed in sunlight, tables laid with fine china, the hum of polite laughter—everything is in place for the perfect afternoon. The Sheridans' party is effortless, untouched by worry, floating on a breeze of privilege. But just beyond the garden's edge, life is different—harsh, unpolished, shaped by struggle.
Laura Sheridan stands between these two worlds, drawn in by beauty yet unsettled by something she can't quite name. A hat, a voice, a fleeting hesitation—small moments that carry unexpected weight. Can innocence survive once you glimpse what lies outside the gates?
Katherine Mansfield captures life in its quietest shifts, where a single step, a single thought, can change everything. In this delicate, fleeting space between celebration and sorrow, a truth lingers—waiting to be seen.

England, 1766: Abigail is happily married to James, a tobacco trader turned sea captain, and is looking forward to starting a family and settling down in Whitehaven, deep in the Lake District. But after a series of devastating losses, she finds herself in turmoil, with her future suddenly seeming unknown… When James announces that he will captain a ship to Africa and then the Americas for a year, it sparks a series of surprising and heartbreaking events—involving some of the darkest evils in humanity’s history and a tiny, terrified slave girl who’s brought back to England. This helpless child forces Abigail to reconsider everything she thought she knew—and will change her life forever… Now: When a shipwreck is discovered off the coast of Cumbria, local expert Rachel is brought in to investigate. Her first thought is that this will be a perfect distraction from her troubled marriage and the memories of her past that she is desperate not to think about. But then it becomes clear the wreck is a slaving ship from the 1700s—one that was recorded as sinking in the Caribbean—and Rachel begins to wonder if there’s more to this terrible mystery than meets the eye. Faced with uncertainty about both the past and present, can Rachel learn from Abigail’s extraordinary story and take the first step towards a brighter future of her own?
