Beschreibung

American Christians are very familiar with the Word of the Lord recorded in II Chronicles 7:14: If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. But just three generations after God spoke these words to King Solomon, He again spoke the following words to His people:  The Lord is with you, if you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you. But if you forsake Him, He will forsake you. For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach them, and without the law. But in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he was found by them. II Chronicles 15:2-3 Is it possible that American Christians today, like God's people of the past, have been for a long time without the true God, without a teaching priest, and without the law? Many Christians have been praying for the next Great Awakening without really understanding what it is they have been asking for. What exactly is a Great Awakening? History tells us that Great Awakenings are about more than stirring up our emotions. A truly Great Awakening is a point in time when there is an abrupt change in the hearts and in the lives of the people, over a sustained period of time. In a truly Great Awakening there is something that we are awakened to, and this book is about identifying what that something is.

Religion has long been a fundamental aspect of human society, influencing cultures, shaping social norms, and providing meaning to people’s lives. The sociology of religion examines how faith and belief systems function within society, analyzing their impact on individuals, communities, and institutions. Unlike theological approaches that focus on the truth or divinity of religious doctrines, sociologists study religion as a social phenomenon, investigating its role in maintaining social order, fostering group identity, and driving social change.
One of the key concerns in the sociology of religion is understanding how religious beliefs and practices are shaped by broader social structures. Religious traditions do not exist in isolation; they are influenced by historical contexts, political systems, and economic conditions. For example, the rise of industrialization and urbanization has been linked to shifts in religious affiliation, with some societies experiencing a decline in traditional religious practices while others see the emergence of new forms of spirituality.
Sociologists also explore the role of religion in social cohesion and conflict. Many theorists, including Émile Durkheim, argue that religion serves as a unifying force, bringing people together through shared rituals, moral values, and collective worship. In this sense, religion helps to reinforce social bonds and provide a sense of belonging. However, religion can also be a source of division, contributing to sectarian conflicts, discrimination, and political struggles. The study of religious pluralism and interfaith relations highlights both the possibilities for coexistence and the challenges posed by religious diversity.

From Homer to Starbucks, a look at sirens and mermaids and feminism and consumerism.

What started as a small sequence of poems about the Starbucks logo grew to monstrous proportions after the poet fell under a siren spell herself. All Day I Dream About Sirens is both an ancient reverie and a screen-induced stupor as these poems reckon with the enduring cultural fascination with siren and mermaid narratives as they span geographies, economies, and generations, chronicling and reconfiguring the male-centered epic and women's bodies and subjectivities.

This audiobook has been recorded using Text to speech (TTS).

Atlantis is known across the world as a tale from fable. But is this really the truth?

Wherever we go and into whatever cultural history we delve, we discover a story similar to the one we know about Atlantis. Why would this be?

Finding the key to this strange conundrum is something thousands of men and women across the globe have struggled to do. But there are good reasons for their lack of concrete discovery. They have all been looking in the wrong place, at the wrong people and for the wrong thing. For too long historians have focused on a few words left to us by Plato and misunderstood what he was really telling us. The fact is, even Plato didn't understand what had been told to him.

But what about joining the dots? Across the world there are remnants and legends of a mystical past, left undiscovered by our misunderstanding. The real Atlantis can and will only be discovered by seeing the bigger picture. Because Atlantis is all around you right now.

Does God call women to serve as equal partners in marriage and as leaders in the church?

The answer to this straightforward question is deeply contested. Into the fray, Lucy Peppiatt offers her work on interpretation of the Bible and Christian practice. With careful exegetical work, Peppiatt considers relevant passages in Ephesians, Colossians, 1 Peter, 1 Timothy, and 1 Corinthians. There she finds a story of God releasing women alongside men into all forms of ministry, leadership, work, and service on the basis of character and gifting, rather than biological sex.

Those who see the overturning of male-dominated hierarchy in the Scriptures, she argues, are truly rediscovering an ancient message—a message distorted by those who assumed that a patriarchal world, which they sometimes saw reflected in the Bible, was the one God had ordained.

This book is a chronicle of a personal search for spiritual enlightenment. John Mucai starts by finding out what religion means. He then looks at the different religions in the world today and zeros in on four major ones: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. The followers of these four religions account for approximately 80% of the world’s population. He looks at their beliefs, practices, and sacred texts.
While the book would be of immense interest to theologians, it is not a book on theology. Instead, it is an attempt by the author to seek spiritual enlightenment by sifting through religious literature. The author’s findings are illuminating. Every reader will find something of value in the book to give their life a better meaning.
