Synopsis

ORKNEY ISLANDS, 1797 – Agnes Tulloch feels a little cheated. This windswept place is not the island paradise her husband promised it to be when they wed. Now with four young children, she struggles to provide for her family while her husband grows increasingly distant.

When a stranger comes ashore to rent an abandoned cottage, Agnes and the other islanders are abuzz with curiosity. Who is this wealthy foreigner and why on earth would he come to Eynhallow? Her curiosity is soon replaced with vexation when her husband hires her out as cook and washerwoman, leaving Agnes with no say in the matter. Agnes begrudgingly befriends this aristocrat-in-exile; a mercurial scientist who toils night and day on some secret pursuit. Despite herself, she's drawn to his dark, brooding charm. And who is this Byronic stranger sweeping Agnes off her feet? His name is Frankenstein and he's come to this remote isle to fulfill a monstrous obligation.

PRODUCTIVITY: The scent of lilac wafted across the garden. Melissa raised her head and watched as the zephyr lifted the skirts of the columbines and ruffled the blowsy peonies. The murmur of the bees did its best to lull her back into lethargy, but it was time to rouse herself: she had been lying in the sun too long.

    Title: Shadow – A Parable
    Author: Edgar Allan Poe
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1835
    Public Domain: Yes
Series Placement: Number 42 in the Timeless Terrors series
    Description:
“Shadow – A Parable” by Edgar Allan Poe is a brief yet profound meditation on death, memory, and the fragile line between the living and the departed. Set amid the aftermath of pestilence, seven figures gather in a dimly lit chamber, haunted by the ghostly presence of a shifting shadow that speaks not to the ear but to the soul.
First published in 1835, this early work reveals Poe’s mastery of atmosphere and allegory — a fusion of Biblical solemnity and gothic despair. The story’s vision of mortality and the dissolution of self foreshadows the existential darkness that would come to define Poe’s later works.
Narrated by Amazon bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance imbues Poe’s haunting prose with a spectral intensity — a voice that rises from the silence of the grave to whisper of humanity’s inevitable end. While the text is in the public domain, this narration is an original performance and copyright © 2025 Jonathan Dunne.
Part of Timeless Terrors, a series devoted to resurrecting the masters of the macabre, Shadow – A Parable stands as an eerie meditation on the universality of death — a moment when even the proudest voices of the living fall silent beneath the eternal shadow.

    Aries:
I kept my distance to protect her. My little stepsister with wide eyes and soft smiles—too innocent for a world like mine. But while I was locked away in darkness, he took my place. My name. My life. Her. Now I’m back. And I’ll burn this world to the ground to get it all back—even if she’s afraid of what I’ve become.

    Lilian:
I was never meant to matter this much. Not to one brother—let alone two. Aries was my almost. The stepbrother I shouldn’t have loved. Arson was the secret. The lie no one warned me about . . . until it was too late. They hate each other. Always have. Always will. But now I’m gone, and the only way to get me back is to work together. Two monsters. One obsession. And when they find me, the war between them won’t stop. It’ll just turn inward—because saving me might be the one thing that breaks them both.

    Arson:
I was never supposed to have a name. He was the golden one. I was the shadow they buried. But then she looked at me—and didn’t run. She saw my brother’s face and wanted me. And I wanted her. Twisted. Pure. Off-limits. Mine. Now she’s been taken, and for the first time in our broken, blood-soaked lives, Aries and I want the same thing. We’ll burn the world to bring her back. And when we do . . . We’ll see which of us she survives.
