Synopsis

In "The Instinct of Workmanship and the State of Industrial Arts," Thorstein Veblen explores the intricate relationship between human instinct and industrial productivity, challenging the prevailing economic theories of his time. With a keen analytical lens, Veblen critiques the capitalist framework and its impact on the art of craftsmanship, arguing for the inherent human desire to create and improve. The book employs a rich, analytical style, blending sociology and economics to underscore the significance of workmanship in the industrial age while advocating for a return to a more creative approach to work, rather than viewing it merely as a means of subsistence or profit. Thorstein Veblen, a prominent American economist and social theorist, emerged in a time marked by rapid industrialization and profound social change. His own experiences within the capitalist society and profound interest in social behavior led him to examine how these institutions affected the human capacity for craftsmanship. Veblen's background in both sociology and economics fundamentally shaped his critiques of economic practices, making him a significant figure in the development of institutional economics. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the sociocultural implications of industrial practices today. Veblen's insights resonate with contemporary discussions about the role of creativity and craftsmanship in a technology-driven economy, making this work both timely and relevant.

The Seven Years' War (1756–1763) marked a global struggle for supremacy between two major powers of the time: Great Britain and France. This conflict unfolded across continents and influenced various colonial and European theaters, laying the groundwork for modern geopolitics. In Europe, tensions stemmed from unresolved disputes left over from the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748), with Prussia and Austria both vying for dominance in the region. At the heart of the European conflict was Prussia's ambition to expand its territories, particularly in Silesia, a region it had claimed during the previous war but which Austria hoped to reclaim. This struggle for control in Central Europe was entangled with the broader power plays of Britain, France, and Spain, who were clashing both on land and at sea in the Americas, the Caribbean, and beyond.
This era saw an unusual shift in traditional alliances, known as the Diplomatic Revolution of 1756, which realigned European powers in surprising ways. Britain, traditionally at odds with Prussia, now found itself allied with its former rival, forming a coalition that included the German region of Hanover, which was united with Britain through the British royal family. Austria, in turn, formed a new alliance with France, its former adversary, bringing along Saxony, Sweden, and Russia in a united front against Prussian and British expansion. This shift altered the balance of power and further complicated the war’s dynamics, as each nation was not only defending its territories but also striving to outmaneuver and contain its rivals.

We are trained from the youngest of ages to imagine that love is a force outside of ourselves; that if you keep swiping, one day your prince will come; that love is something you have to look for, work for, diet for.
The truth is: we are creators of love, not discoverers of love, and until we realise that love comes out of us, rather than to us, we'll never really get it or feel it.
Conor Creighton learned this the hard way with a string of tumultuous relationships in his past. That was until, through meditation, he woke up to the powerful force that is self-love and watched as his relationships and the whole world transformed around him.
In a unique hybrid of memoir and self-help, here Conor uses his life lessons to help readers wake up to the truth about love. A modern manifesto and spiritual guide to relationships, The Truth About Love makes a daring call to action, showing how to change yourself and the world around you through the courageous act of opening your heart.
