Beschreibung

In "Old Mother West Wind (Illustrated Edition)," Thornton Burgess masterfully weaves a tapestry of enchanting tales centered around the adventures of a whimsical cast of animal characters living in the idyllic setting of the Green Meadows and the Green Forest. Employing a charming and accessible style, Burgess imbues his narratives with anthropomorphic qualities, cleverly imparting moral lessons while engaging young readers with vivid illustrations. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century American literature, this work reflects the growing interest in nature and the environment, themes that Burgess seamlessly integrates into his storytelling. Thornton Burgess, a naturalist, and conservationist, drew deeply from his love for the countryside and its inhabitants when writing this beloved book. His early experiences in rural Massachusetts, coupled with a passion for wildlife preservation, are evident in his portrayal of nature's harmonious balance. As a prolific writer, Burgess produced a plethora of children's stories, many of which promote ecological awareness, underscoring the importance of understanding and protecting the natural world. "Old Mother West Wind" is an essential read for both children and adults alike, offering timeless lessons wrapped in delightful tales. Readers will find themselves transported to a world where imagination thrives and nature's beauty reigns. This illustrated edition enhances the experience, making it a perfect addition to any family's bookshelf.

Americans have long been fascinated by the Civil War and its biggest battles, particularly Gettysburg, Antietam, and Shiloh, all of which involved Robert E. Lee or Ulysses S. Grant. But one of the 6 biggest battles of the war, and the one that took the heaviest toll by % on both armies was fought at the end of 1862 in Tennessee, and it involved neither of those generals.
In late December 1862, William Rosecrans’s Union Army of the Cumberland was contesting Middle Tennessee against Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee, and for three days the two armies savaged each other as Bragg threw his army at Rosecrans in a series of desperate assaults. Bragg’s army was unable to dislodge the Union army, and he eventually withdrew his army after learning that Rosecrans was on the verge of receiving reinforcements. Though the battle was stalemated, the fact that the Union army was left in possession of the field allowed Rosecrans to declare victory and embarrassed Bragg.
Though Stones River is mostly overlooked as a Civil War battle today, it had a decisive impact on the war. The two armies had both suffered nearly 33% casualties, an astounding number in 1862 that also ensured Rosecrans would not start another offensive campaign in Tennessee until the following June. The Union victory also ensured control of Nashville, Middle Tennessee, and Kentucky for the rest of the war, prompting Lincoln to tell Rosecrans, “You gave us a hard-earned victory, which had there been a defeat instead, the nation could scarcely have lived over." The battle and its results also set into motion a chain of events that would lead to Rosecrans and Bragg facing off at the crucial battle of Chickamauga in September 1863, a battle that is often viewed as the last gasp for the Confederates’ hopes in the West.

Ellis is ready for his star turn, playing harmonica on national television—until his big break turns into the most embarrassing moment of his life.   Ellis’s confidence bubble has officially burst, and he tries to keep a low profile at school. To make matters worse, Ellis's dad is going gaga for a new girlfriend, and DJ Wishbone is pushed out of his radio station—and takes over Ellis’s place in the store. Can Ellis help those he loves, carve out a place for himself in Dad's new life, and recover his confidence?
