Synopsis

In "Introduction to the Philosophy and Writings of Plato," Thomas Taylor expertly navigates the complex terrain of Platonic thought, elucidating the foundational concepts and dialogues that have shaped Western philosophy. Taylor employs a didactic literary style, combining rigorous analysis with accessible prose that invites both scholars and lay readers alike into the intricacies of Plato's ideas. His contextualization of Plato within the broader framework of Ancient Greek philosophy reveals both the interconnectedness of philosophical thought and the relevance of Platonic ideals in contemporary discourse. Through meticulous examination of dialogues such as "The Republic" and "Phaedrus," Taylor offers insight into the allegorical subtleties and metaphysical underpinnings of Plato's work. Thomas Taylor, renowned as one of the foremost Neoplatonist philosophers and translators in the early 19th century, was greatly influenced by both classical thought and mystical philosophy. His extensive background in Ancient Greek literature and dedication to reviving Platonic texts positioned him uniquely to provide readers with a richly informed perspective on Plato's philosophies. This work reflects Taylor's passion for uncovering the spiritual dimensions of Plato's dialogues, which resonates with his own philosophical inquiries. I highly recommend "Introduction to the Philosophy and Writings of Plato" to anyone interested in the enduring legacy of Platonic thought. Ready to unravel the mystery of Laurie and Adaptive Attractiveness? He Has Brown Skin. in this episode I will be focusing to the fact that he doesn't have that in the movies, and I am going explore the possible reasons why Laurie has written to have brown skin in Little Women, and investigate whether or not this was intentional.
In Little Women, Louisa May Alcott wrote that Laurie has "curly black hair, black eyes and brown skin", but Laurie has never been played by a brown-skinned actor.
Little Women Podcast is an ongoing series of video essays, articles and podcast episodes that examines the intersections in Louisa May Alcott´s Little Women.

Our world, without question, is experiencing aberrational times. The life-altering realities of COVID-19 that I worked through as White House press secretary were just the start of it. What followed was a series of history-defining events. From the fall of Afghanistan to the nationwide crime wave, we've all endured painful images of death, destruction, and chaos. Meanwhile, radical teachings on gender and race have infiltrated our nation's schools, poisoning the minds of our children—all at a time when our country feels more divided than ever before. Along with these twenty-first century realities can come a feeling of despair and discouragement. Indeed, I hear it all the time as I crisscross the country: Americans feel disheartened and seek hope.

Taking a similar format to my New York Times bestselling book, For Such a Time as This, I analyze our domestic and international challenges through the lens of faith. Though we have lived through dark times, the storms we face have prompted many great leaders to rise to the moment and have left a yearning in the human heart for a Savior, Jesus Christ, who is walking alongside us every step of the way.

The Yompers - With 45 Commando...

Called to action on 2 April 1982, the men of 45 Commando Royal Marines assembled from around the world to sail 8,000 miles to recover the Falkland Islands from Argentine invasion. Lacking helicopters and short of food, they ‘yomped’ in appalling weather carrying overloaded rucksacks, across the roughest terrain. Yet for a month in mid-winter, they remained a cohesive fighting-fit body of men. They then fought and won the highly successful and fierce night battle for Two Sisters, a 1,000 foot high mountain which was the key to the defensive positions around Stanley.

This is a first hand story of that epic feat, but it is much more than that. The first to be written by a company commander in the Falklands War, the book gives a compelling, vivid description of the ‘yomp’ and infantry fighting, and it also offers penetrating insights into the realities of war at higher levels. It is a unique combination of descriptive writing about frontline fighting and wider reflections on the Falklands War, and conflict in general.

Gritty and moving; sophisticated, reflective and funny, this book offers an abundance of timeless truths about war.

Postscript: ‘Yomping’ was the word used by the Commandos for carrying heavy loads on long marches. It caught the public’s imagination during this short but bitter campaign and epitomized the grim determination and professionalism of our troops.

Thales - Thoughts and Ideas from...

Thales of Miletus, often hailed as the first philosopher in Western history, was born in the ancient Greek city of Miletus, around 624 BCE. As a figure whose contributions have shaped the course of philosophy, science, and mathematics, Thales stands as a foundational figure in intellectual history. Although much of his life remains shrouded in mystery due to the passage of time, the few details that have survived reveal a thinker whose ideas and insights went beyond the conventional beliefs of his era.
Thales is traditionally considered the first to break away from mythological explanations of the world. Prior to Thales, the Greek understanding of nature was largely dominated by myth and religious explanations, where gods and divine forces were invoked to explain the natural phenomena. Thales, however, proposed a radical shift by seeking rational, natural explanations. He is best known for his theory that water is the fundamental substance from which everything originates. This insight marks a profound moment in intellectual history because it moved away from mythological thinking and introduced the idea of a unifying principle underlying all things.
In addition to his contributions to philosophy, Thales was also a mathematician and astronomer, and his influence in these fields is considerable. He is credited with being the first to predict a solar eclipse, using his understanding of the stars and celestial movements. His work in geometry is equally important—he is famously known for Thales’ Theorem, which laid the groundwork for the development of geometry. This theorem states that if two points are on a circle, and a line is drawn through them, then the center of that line will always lie on a straight line through the center of the circle. This geometric insight shows his ability to understand and systematize mathematical concepts that were previously unexamined.
