Synopsis

In the "Thomas More Premium Edition," readers are offered a comprehensive exploration of More's seminal works, including his magnum opus, "Utopia," and other varied writings that encapsulate his humanist philosophy and ethical concerns. The literary style is marked by a rich, articulate prose that seamlessly blends narrative, dialogue, and philosophical discourse, set against the backdrop of 16th-century Europe—a period rife with political upheaval and theological debate. More's incisive critiques of contemporary society and vivid imagination come together to create a thought-provoking commentary on the ideal state and human virtue, showcasing his commitment to Renaissance humanism. Thomas More (1478-1535) was a lawyer, statesman, and philosopher, renowned for his unwavering moral integrity and profound intellect. His tumultuous relationship with King Henry VIII, particularly concerning issues of faith and governance, directly influenced his writings. More's experiences in a rapidly changing socio-political landscape, coupled with his deep Catholic faith, fueled his desire to articulate a vision of justice and community that remains relevant. This edition is highly recommended for readers seeking to understand the complexities of More's thought and its implications for contemporary discussions on ethics, governance, and society. By delving into More's works, one is invited to reflect on the ideals of justice, the moral obligations of governance, and the enduring quest for an equitable society.

The story of the Thirteen Colonies' struggle for independence from Britain is well known to every American schoolchild. But at the start of the Revolutionary War, there were more than thirteen British colonies in North America. Patriots were surrounded by Indigenous homelands and loyal provinces. Independence had its limits.

Upper Canada, Lower Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and especially the homelands that straddled colonial borders, were far less foreign to the men and women who established the United States than Canada is to those who live here now. These northern neighbors were far from inactive during the Revolution. The participation of the loyal British provinces and Indigenous nations that largely rejected the Revolution—as antagonists, opponents, or bystanders—shaped the progress of the conflict and influenced the American nation's early development.

In this book, historian Jeffers Lennox looks north, as so many Americans at that time did, and describes how Loyalists and Indigenous leaders frustrated Patriot ambitions, defended their territory, and acted as midwives to the birth of the United States while restricting and redirecting its continental aspirations.

Research analyst Aoife Gallagher has spent years investigating the darkest corners of the internet, but what happens when the online world spills into real life? Web of Lies is a fascinating deep dive into the rising threat of conspiratorial thought in Ireland and internationally, and explores how the internet is being used to spread disinformation – polarising society and radicalising people into extremism in the process.
With balance and fairness, Gallagher connects the worldʼs oldest hatreds to current online cultures, showing how conspiratorial thinking can proliferate during times of crisis and how to recognise its most harmful impacts. Web of Lies is an urgent, provocative but ultimately hopeful call to protect ourselves and our loved ones, before itʼs too late . . . …

Notwithstanding its ruthless dynamics, the capitalist economy has the flaw of deficient employment-generating spending. This leads to unemployment of non-owners, individual suffering, social unrest and it undermines military strength. To deal with these issues, states use prosthetic policies, artificial transfers to the productive economy and to non-owners. But the funding of such prosthetic policies - through violent wealth appropriation abroad, protectionism, war, domestic expropriation and taxation, debt and money creation - is caught in dilemmas, while politicians are caught between non-solutions. According to Gerhard H. Wächter, the history of capitalist society is largely the history of this dilemmatic brotherhood.

Japanese Major General Horii Tomitarô, commanding the South Seas Force, had the Australians on the back foot. Australia was holding the last defendable ridge in the Owen Stanley ranges, Imita Ridge. Horii to his distress was then given orders from Imperial Headquarters in Tokyo that he was to fall back across the mountains to the Japanese beachheads at Gona, Sanananda, and Buna, leaving a force between Templeton’s Crossing and Eora Creek to stop any Australian advance through the mountains. The Japanese, unknown to the Australians evacuated Ioribaiwa Ridge just before they launched their attacks and to their amazement on storming the heights, the Australians encountered no resistance – the Japanese had gone.

This, however, did not mean the fighting on the Kokoda Track was over, far from it. Three more desperate actions would be fought by the Australians and Japanese, before the decisive battles for the Japanese beachheads could be decided – the battles for Templeton’s Crossing, Eora Creek, and finally the Oivi-Gorari positions on the northern lowland plains. Just 15-kilometres east lay the Kumusi River, the last geographical barrier before reaching the strongly fortified Japanese beachheads themselves.
