Synopsis

In "The Planters of Colonial Virginia," Thomas J. Wertenbaker meticulously examines the socio-economic and cultural influences that shaped early Virginia's agrarian society. Employing a narrative style enriched with meticulous research and a wealth of primary sources, Wertenbaker delves into the lives of the planters, their transatlantic ties, and the evolution of plantation economies. The book situates itself within the broader context of American colonial literature, offering insights into the interplay between wealth, power, and the often-overlooked complexities of labor systems, including servitude and slavery. Thomas J. Wertenbaker, a distinguished historian and professor, draws upon his deep-seated interest in early American history, sparked by the rich legacy of colonial narratives intertwined with his own American roots. Wertenbaker'Äôs academic pursuits and extensive travel throughout Virginia'Äôs historical landscape underscore his thorough understanding of the era and lend authenticity to his portrayal of the complexities faced by plantation owners and their communities. His background in education and history offers a unique lens through which to analyze the plantation system'Äôs far-reaching implications. This seminal work is a must-read for anyone interested in the foundations of American society and its economic life. Wertenbaker'Äôs compelling narrative not only captivates but also educates, making it an essential addition to the libraries of students, scholars, and history enthusiasts alike.

Some historians have called the Seven Years’ War the first true world war, and they make a good point. In Europe, an alliance of Great Britain, the German state of Hanover (the ruling house of Britain was from Hanover) and Prussia fought a series of battles against an alliance of France, Austria and Russia, with the occasional involvement of some other European powers such as Sweden and Spain. The war was also fought in many other parts of the world, including in India, West Africa and the Caribbean, where both the French and the British had colonies. In addition to the fighting on land, battles were fought between ships on the high seas, and these naval battles were generally won by the British, who boasted the 18th century’s best navy. Ultimately, this globally coordinated war involved five continents and at least 29 states and tribal confederacies, with a casualty toll in the millions and the maps forever altered.
The war’s origins stemmed from the rivalry between two sets of European powers that found expression in the War of the Austrian Succession of 1740-1748. In 1740, Charles VI was emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, a dysfunctional aggregation of practically independent states corresponding roughly to what is now Germany. He was of the House of Habsburg, as were preceding emperors, but he had no sons, and the Salic Law then in effect in Germany forbade female succession. Charles did not want to see the Habsburg family lands, which were vast, broken up. These lands included Austria, Bohemia, Silesia, Hungary, the Austrian Netherlands (Belgium), Milan, Mantua, Parma, and Tuscany, making the Habsburgs one of the richest and most powerful families in Europe.

Macau is known as the Las Vegas of China. It attracts many tourists every year, and it has a unique set of laws and history behind it. How did it become this way? Well, one of the reasons is that it used to be part of the Portuguese Empire. We have probably all heard about the British in China, the Opium Wars, and the tea export, but you might not have heard about the Portuguese settlers who went there. Macau still shows signs of Portuguese influence, even when you go there to visit. So, let’s take a look at what happened and how the area evolved into what it is today.
