An expert analysis of Abraham Lincoln's three most powerful speeches reveals his rhetorical genius and his thoughts on our national character.

Abraham Lincoln, our greatest president, believed that our national character was defined by three key moments: the writing of the Constitution, our declaration of independence from England, and the beginning of slavery on the North American continent. His thoughts on these landmarks can be traced through three speeches: the Lyceum Address, the Gettysburg Address, and the Second Inaugural. The latter two are well-known, enshrined forever on the walls of the Lincoln Memorial. The former is much less familiar to most, written a quarter century before his presidency, when he was a twenty-eight-year-old Illinois state legislator.

In His Greatest Speeches, professor Diana Schaub offers a brilliant line-by-line analysis of these timeless works, placing them in historical context and explaining the brilliance behind their rhetoric. The result is a complete vision of Lincoln's worldview that is sure to fascinate and inspire general audiences and history buffs alike. This book is a wholly original resource for considering the difficult questions of American purpose and identity, questions that are no less contentious or essential today than they were over two hundred years ago.

Arnold Döring was just twenty-three years old when he flew his first mission against the Soviet Union on June 21, 1941. On that day he started writing his diary. His account not only describe the technical aspects and the difficulties posed by weather and terrain, but are also filled with suspense, with detailed descriptions of bombing raids and narrow escapes from enemy fighter planes. With detached professionalism, Döring offers us thrilling, action-packed snapshots of life as a Luftwaffe pilot. This volume of the diaries, translated into English for the first time, covers the period from August 1943 to May 1945, when the author was flying sorties as a nightfighter, including Operation Gisela, the largest and final operation of the Luftwaffe against the Allies. Despite experiencing crash-landings, near misses, terrifying night missions and precarious flights with too little fuel and under-trained crew, Döring survived through his skill and instincts, as well as a fair amount of luck.

The search for Tutankhamun’s tomb was one of the most ambitious archaeological pursuits of the early 20th century. For years, Egyptologists and explorers had scoured the Valley of the Kings, believing that the burial site of the young pharaoh remained hidden beneath the desert sands. Despite previous excavations yielding little success, one man remained convinced that the tomb had yet to be discovered.
Howard Carter, a British archaeologist, had spent decades working in Egypt, developing an unmatched expertise in excavation. His belief in the existence of Tutankhamun’s tomb was fueled by fragments of artifacts bearing the young pharaoh’s name, suggesting that his final resting place was still untouched. However, funding such an extensive search required a patron, and it was Lord Carnarvon, a wealthy British aristocrat, who provided the financial backing. In 1917, Carter’s systematic excavation of the Valley of the Kings began, but after several years of fruitless digging, Carnarvon grew impatient.
By 1922, with resources nearly depleted, Carter convinced Carnarvon to allow him one final season of excavation. It was in November of that year that Carter’s persistence paid off. While investigating an area near the tomb of Ramses VI, workers uncovered a set of steps leading down into the earth. Clearing away the debris, Carter discovered a sealed doorway marked with the insignia of Tutankhamun. Excitement and caution filled the air as he realized that the tomb had remained undisturbed for centuries.

An illuminating history of the reform agenda in higher education.

For well over one hundred years, people have been attempting to make American colleges and universities more efficient and more accountable. Indeed, Ethan Ris argues in Other People’s Colleges, the reform impulse is baked into American higher education, the result of generations of elite reformers who have called for sweeping changes in the sector and raised existential questions about its sustainability. When that reform is beneficial, offering major rewards for minor changes, colleges and universities know how to assimilate it. When it is hostile, attacking autonomy or values, they know how to resist it. The result is a sector that has learned to accept top-down reform as part of its existence.

In the early twentieth century, the “academic engineers,” a cadre of elite, external reformers from foundations, businesses, and government, worked to reshape and reorganize the vast base of the higher education pyramid. Their reform efforts were largely directed at the lower tiers of higher education, but those efforts fell short, despite the wealth and power of their backers, leaving a legacy of successful resistance that affects every college and university in the United States. Today, another coalition of business leaders, philanthropists, and politicians is again demanding efficiency, accountability, and utility from American higher education. But, as Ris argues, top-down design is not destiny. Drawing on extensive and original archival research, Other People’s Colleges offers an account of higher education that sheds light on today’s reform agenda.
