Beschreibung

The Complete Poetry of Thomas Hardy is an expansive collection that showcases the profound depth and emotional resonance characteristic of Hardy's poetic oeuvre. Bursting with lyrical beauty, these poems traverse themes of love, loss, nature, and existential reflection, frequently set against the backdrop of rural England. Hardy's literary style, marked by a blend of stark realism and rich imagery, invites readers into a world where human experience is irrevocably tied to the forces of nature and fate. The chronological arrangement of the poems offers insights into his evolving perspective, particularly in juxtaposition with the societal shifts of the late Victorian and early 20th centuries. Thomas Hardy, renowned as both a novelist and poet, was deeply influenced by the rural landscapes of his native Dorset and the tumultuous social changes of his time. His early training as an architect and lifelong fascination with the natural world informed his poetical articulation, leading him to question the human condition within a vast, indifferent universe. Hardy's own experiences with love and loss echo through these verses, making them a poignant testament to his understanding of life's complexities. Readers are encouraged to delve into The Complete Poetry of Thomas Hardy, as it serves not only as a historical reflection of its time but also as a timeless exploration of human emotions. Each poem challenges and comforts, urging us to contemplate our place in the world and the inevitable passage of time. This collection is an indispensable addition for both Hardy aficionados and those venturing into his poetic landscape for the first time.

Unlike his more famous fellow war poets, Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon survived the First World War. In this collection of 64 poems, first published in 1920, Sassoon portrays the dehumanizing horror of modern warfare with its staggering death toll, while also satiring the jingoistic fervour of politicians and armchair strategists.
Sassoon's own war service fell into two distinct periods. The first was marked by a number of heroic actions on the battlefield which earned him the Military Cross. However, after a period of convalescence in 1917, Sasson became a pacifist and refused to return to active duty. This change of attitude was diagnosed as a psychological disorder and he was posted to Ireland where he trained new recruits. By the end of the war he had been promoted to captain. For the rest of his long life he remained staunchly anti-war.

The heat of summer on an earlobe, a parking meter, the shadow of crabs and pigeons under a cherry tree, an olive, a shoulder blade in the poems of Nicole Brossard these concrete, quotidian things move languorously through the senses to find a place beyond language. Taken together, they create an audacious new architecture of meaning.

Nicole Brossard, one of the world’s foremost literary innovators, is known for her experiments with language and her groundbreaking treatment of desire and gender. This dextrous translation by the award-winning poets and translators Erin Moure and Robert Majzels brings into English, with great verve and sensitivity, Brossard’s remarkable syntax and sensuality.

‘[Brossard’s] use of elliptical formulations and syntactical hijackings creates tensions between the image and the statement that result in a style that is unmistakably hers.’

    – La Presse

‘A new work by Brossard is an event – Yesterday, at the Hotel Clarendon is not merely experimental. It’s radical.’

In Are You There, Indiana poet Samantha Fain refracts contemporary melancholia into iridescent lyricism. Fain delights in breaking rules, the serendipity of autocorrect incantations, testing how far, in space and time, a connection will travel, and where it ends—quoting sources including Schrödinger, Ask Jeeves and Kim Kardashian. In Fain's haunting poetics, grief, mania, pop culture, faith, quantum physics and digital relationships collide, alive with the spiky humour of brutal self-awareness, aglow with startling new language.

"These poems are like Neosporin; they sting and they heal." Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Creator of Bojack Horseman.

"The most lyrically provoking debut I've ever read. Samantha Fain articulates the complex contemporary manifestations of grief and desire, while still giving us possibility instead of foreclosure." C.T. Salazar, Headless John the Baptist Hitchhiking

Do ye hear the children weeping, O my brothers,
Ere the sorrow comes with years ?
They are leaning their young heads against their mothers, —
And that cannot stop their tears.
