Tracing Your Great War Ancestors: The Egypt and Palestine Campaigns is the first book explicitly aimed at helping the descendants of those who fought in this part of the Middle East find out more about their ancestors actions, experiences and achievements. Their wartime lives were very different to those who served on the Western Front, and yet have never before been explored from this angle.Hundreds of thousands of British and Imperial troops fought in the Western Desert, Sinai Desert, Palestine, the Jordan Valley and Syria. They served in conditions quite unlike those more familiarly faced in France and Flanders, with everyday challenges to survival including the heat, lack of water, hostile wildlife and rampant disease. The fighting too was of a different character, with more open, sweeping campaigns across desert and mountains, and comparatively little systematic trench warfare. As well as giving the reader a vivid impression of the experience of wartime service in the region, Stuart Hadaways handbook provides a guide to the main sources, archives and websites that researchers can consult to get an insight into their ancestors role and their contribution to the war effort.

The negotiated transfer of power in apartheid South Africa was the last act in the dismantling of white supremacy on the African continent. While opening a new era for the whites in Africa, it closed an earlier one that contains some of the most colourful episodes in world history. In The White Africans, South African journalist and writer Gerald L'Ange gives a warts-and-all account of the European experience in Africa, from the explorations of the 15th-century Portuguese mariners to the presidential inauguration of Nelson Mandela in 1994. The story is traced through the Europeans' exploration and settlement, through their slavery and economic exploitation, their conquest and colonisation, through decolonisation and the liberation struggles in Kenya, Algeria, the Portuguese territories, Rhodesia and Namibia to the negotiation of democracy in South Africa. Avoiding both past falsities and recent distortions, the book seeks the truth of the European experience, examines the present situation of the white Africans and looks at what might lie ahead for them.

The emergence of mind in a physical world presents an ontologically and methodologically well founded physicalist proposal that does not lose sight of the special particularity and alleged irreducibility of some of the most obvious phenomena of our existence, such as the human mind. The author provides a compelling argument against the most widely accepted interpretation of physicalism, microphysicalism, highlighting its deep empirical and conceptual problems, as well as an insightful response to the reiterated critiques leveled by some reductionist philosophers, especially Jaegwon Kim, at the non-reductive physicalist explanation of the causal relevance of mental and higher level properties. Morales argues in favor of emergentism as a non-reductive physicalist proposal that explains the causal reality of higher-level properties as metaphysically bases. This novel interpretation will be of great interest to scholars working in the field of philosophy of mind.

Do you remember the stories of those taken prisoner during WWII? Can you name any heroes from the war? How many of those names are of women?
So often, we remember war heroes as men completing great feats of strength on the battlefield, saving the lives of their fellow soldiers. There have been multiple books, films, and articles written about soldiers during WWII. Some are fictional, while some are based on true stories. From Saving Private Ryan to The Great Escape, the public is not at any loss for the stories of the trials that men faced during the Second World War.
The stories that are all too often forgotten are those of the women. These are true stories of female prisoners of war, courageous nurses taken prisoner while serving in the military to take care of those soldiers. They are the women who risked life and limb to do what they could to stop the spread of fascism.
Within the pages of this book lie the stories of five incredible women prisoners of war during World War Two. These women not only risked their lives in the line of duty, just as their male counterparts did, but they also faced horrific atrocities and risks directly tied to their gender.
    These women are:
    • A flight nurse whose plane was shot down over enemy lines only to completely confuse the German Army as to what to do with her.
    • An American woman living in Germany who worked to infiltrate the Nazis to dismantle the system from the inside.
    • The sole survivor of a mass murder of nurses only to have her own government silence her from telling her story.
    • A feminist and political activist working to stop fascism and educate her fellow women, even while inside a concentration camp.
    • A nurse who simply wanted to return to her post regardless of the torture she endured.
It is our duty to remember these women who survived war and honor them as the true heroines they were.
