Every society has their stories; every culture has their protagonists who scamper, struggle, laugh and cry. Each of these fictional beings has something to teach us, if we’re ready to listen. Storytelling is quick, powerful, free, natural, refreshing; entertaining, moving, memorable and authentic. Stories help us make sense of the world and our place in it.   A story is something that comes from outside. But the meaning is something that emerges from within. When a story reaches our hearts with deep meaning, it takes hold of us. Once it does so, we can let it go, and yet it remains with us. We do not weary of this experience.  Once we have had one story, we are ready for another. Why? It’s simple: because a good story can transmit the essential magic of connectedness between the self and the universe. Through stories, especially those passed down through the generations, we can let go the need to control and the fear that goes with it; learning that the world has the capacity to organize itself, as well as truly celebrating the complexity of living. Are you ready? Settle in for some stories and my insights on the lessons held within each. There are also exercises you can engage in to broaden the impact of these powerful tales.

  William Fryer Harvey (1885-1937) was an English writer of short stories, most notably in the mystery and horror genres, in which many of his works are recognized as masterpieces.The Lake is an intriguing mystery story. "There is something terribly wrong with the lake" are the dying words of the rich, elderly invalid Mrs. Carstairs, spoken to her private nurse. The death of Mrs. Carstairs is extremely opportune for three people - the nephew and nieces of the deceased.Nurse Wilkie is not satisfied with the circumstances of Mrs. Carstairs' death...and what on earth could her remark about the lake refer to?   "The Gift of the Magi" is a short story by O. Henry first published in 1905. The story tells of a young husband and wife and how they deal with the challenge of buying secret Christmas gifts for each other with very little money. As a sentimental story with a moral lesson about gift-giving, it has been popular for adaptation, especially for presentation at Christmas time. The plot and its twist ending are well-known, and the ending is generally considered an example of comic irony. It was allegedly written at Pete's Tavern on Irving Place in New York City.The story was initially published in The New York Sunday World under the title "Gifts of the Magi". It was first published in book form in the O. Henry Anthology The Four Million in April 1906.Among the most significant works O.   Four Max Carrados Detective Stories

  Ernest Bramah is mainly known for his 'Kai Lung' books - Dorothy L Sayers often used quotes from them for her chapter headings. In his lifetime however he was equally well known for his detective stories. Since Sherlock Holmes we have had French detectives, Belgian detectives, aristocratic detectives, royal detectives, ecclesiastical detectives, drunken detectives and even a (very) few quite normal happily married detectives.
