The Last Plantagenets is a history book which covers the period from 1377 to 1485 when civil war ravaged England, rebellious peasants marched on London and wandering preachers sowed dissent in the credulous poor. The last Plantagenet monarchs governed in violence and confusion. Kings came and went, deposed or murdered. Princes and nobles slaughtered or were slaughtered in bloody battles or private feuds. Long before the United States was conceived, the land that would become America was home to diverse Native nations with distinct cultures, languages, and ways of life. These Indigenous peoples had established intricate societies with deep spiritual ties to the land. Their histories and traditions stretched back centuries, shaped by the environment and a rich tapestry of social and economic systems. When European settlers began arriving in the early 1600s, they encountered not an empty wilderness, but thriving civilizations. However, the arrival of these settlers would soon mark a period of upheaval and change that would drastically alter the continent’s destiny.
The first European settlements were often fragile, dependent on Indigenous knowledge and assistance for survival. The English at Jamestown, the Pilgrims in Plymouth, and other colonial groups faced starvation, disease, and harsh climates. Over time, however, these colonies grew stronger and more permanent. As settlers established farms, towns, and trade routes, they also began to encroach upon Native lands, leading to rising tensions and inevitable conflict. Colonial powers such as Britain, France, and Spain vied for control over these territories, using both diplomacy and violence to expand their influence. The early colonial period was thus characterized by both cooperation and confrontation, shaping a complex legacy of interaction between Natives and newcomers.
As settlements expanded, so too did European influence over the land. Colonists brought with them not only goods and technology but also new political, religious, and economic systems. These imported ideas began to take root, forming the foundations of what would later become American governance and identity. At the same time, the enslaved labor of Africans was introduced into the colonies, creating a brutal institution that would come to define much of the nation's future struggles.

Empowering stories from the frontlines of compassion.
Dr. Susan Partovi first experienced poverty medicine volunteering at a dump site in Tijuana during high school. There, she recognized the need for all people to have access to quality medical care. Over the years, she has worked in various facilities around Los Angeles County, incorporating her renegade method of going the extra mile for her patients. As Medical Director of Homeless Health Care Los Angeles, she works to provide a safety net of care for the underserved skid row community and surrounding neighborhoods.
Recognized internationally as a leader in street medicine, Dr. Partovi started documenting her patients' stories so that others could hear their voices. By addressing the practical and moral considerations when treating each patient, Dr. Partovi developed her philosophies about what it means to be a "good doctor." Along the way, she began to understand how her personal ethics evolved―from a challenging childhood and complicated relationships with her parents, through professional hurdles―often, she had to push against a system that doesn't always put the patient first.
Renegade MD: A Doctor's Stories from the Streets is a powerful and inspiring memoir by Dr. Susan Partovi, a renowned street doctor who has dedicated her life to treating the impoverished around the world and people experiencing homelessness on LA's skid row. Through her stories, Dr. Partovi takes us on a journey to the heart of the challenges faced by those living on the streets, and shines a light on her unwavering commitment to advocate for social justice and to provide compassionate care to some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
