Synopsis

In "The Cruise of the Dolphin," Thomas Bailey Aldrich masterfully weaves a rich tapestry of adventure and introspection set against the backdrop of the expansive ocean. The narrative follows a group of seafarers as they embark on a transformative journey aboard the Dolphin, exploring themes of freedom, identity, and the sublime beauty of nature. Aldrich's vivid prose captures the essence of maritime life, blending detailed descriptions with lyrical language that evoke a sense of wonder and melancholy. This novel reflects the American Romantic literary context of the late 19th century, where the wilderness often serves as a character unto itself, inviting readers into a world of introspective discovery and exploration. Thomas Bailey Aldrich, a prominent American author and poet of his time, was known for his keen observation of life and nature—experiences reflected in this narrative. Born in 1836, Aldrich's diverse career as an editor, writer, and literateur provided him with a nuanced understanding of the human condition, which permeates his work. His exposure to both coastal landscapes and the literary world of New England contributed significantly to the themes and settings he chose to depict in "The Cruise of the Dolphin." This captivating exploration of maritime adventure is highly recommended for readers interested in American literature and the Romantic movement's transcendental philosophies. Aldrich's ability to blend adventure with philosophical musings makes this novel a compelling read for those seeking profound insights wrapped in mesmerizing prose. Throughout the long centuries of human history is the want, and the need, to share information, to exchange ideas and for that knowledge and experience, for curiosity and learning, to be the basis of a civil society.
In literature the ambition is much narrower. In order to be known, to be popular, you had to be published. And for that people had to know you existed and your ideas worth reading. Obviously for most of humanity’s time people couldn’t read and texts couldn’t be published in any great number.
In the 15th Century Gutenberg’s printing press began the revolution to address the second and by the 19th century had gathered pace with startling speed and mass distribution. Education for the many was brought in to help people understand more of their world and, with new skills, how to have a better place within it. Now, if the powers that owned the presses and means of distribution agreed an audience would now be able to avail themselves of your ideas, your printed words.
Sadly, in the thirst for the new, the recent and the past fell from sight, relegated to dark corners and dusty shelves.
But the printed word is rarely without someone, somewhere busying themselves through piles of papers and books rediscovering what a good story is, whatever its age.

In this volume we offer up a small selection of those talents whose time has now come again.

Charlie: When I agreed to come on this adventure, I didn’t realize I’d end up sitting in the middle of a smoke-filled casino wearing an uncomfortable suit. But it's worth it when I meet a classic beauty who would photograph beautifully through my lens.
Bethany: A bachelorette party in Vegas is on my list of top five things I never want to do, but when I meet the photographer I’ve obsessed over for the last six-months, I’m thinking the woo-hoos and long thick lollipops aren’t so bad. Even better is the hot way he looks at me, as if he’s taking mental snapshots, but a famous fashion photographer couldn’t be interested in me.

Clotilde Augusta Inez Mary Graves was born on the 3rd June 1863 at Buttevant Castle, Co. Cork, to parents with military backgrounds.

At age nine, the family moved to Southsea in England for yet another military posting. Her father’s postings gave her valuable experiences that would be put to good use in later years in some of her literary works.

She was educated at a Catholic convent in Lourdes before returning to London in 1884 to study art in Bloomsbury. She worked part-time at the British Museum and the Royal Female School of Art and generated further income by drawing little pen-and-ink grotesques for the comic papers.

A few years later a chance meeting found her writing extra lyrics for a pantomime version of Puss in Boots. She followed up with several financially successful plays, both in London and New York, and gained a measure of notoriety in one with the comparison of marriage and prostitution.

Despite her dramatic success she published her first novel in 1911 under the pseudonym of Richard Dehan which she continued to use for later works. As well as novels and plays she published collections of short stories which glow with talent and invention.

She was an unusual figure in London society, wearing her hair short, taking on a masculine manner and cut of clothing, and smoking cigarettes in public when such traits were considered eccentric at best. Add to this her admired collection of Chinese and Japanese trophies, her enthusiasm for fly-fishing and her riding of a tricycle and you have a perfect image of this fascinating writer.

Clotilde Graves died at the convent of Our Lady of Lourdes at Hatch End in Middlesex, on the 3rd December 1932. She was 69.

New York Times Bestseller: In Victorian Britain, an affluent woman hosts a group of Catholic priests in her home—and listens as they tell their stories. Rose, a young girl visiting her grandmother, sits among eleven priests from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. As each guest shares the most challenging moments of their vocations, tests of faith that have brought them face-to-face with the miseries, temptations, and evils that lurk beyond the peaceful confines of the rectory, their worldly, wealthy hostess and her granddaughter come to learn the struggles and outcomes of these confrontations with the human condition. “The priests themselves represent a mixed lot—men of exalted backgrounds, culture, worldly experience, who have found their hardest task bringing themselves down to the humble people of their flocks; men who understand only the intellectual, realistic aspects of their faith—and must learn to accept the mystical as well; men who hide their saintliness under uncouth exteriors, who learn the hard way to love their fellow men, who encounter devils as well as saints, murderers, sinners. . . . Lively reading.” —Kirkus Reviews

There is something about the number 3.

The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.

Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.

Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.
