Beschreibung

In "The History of Rome: The Establishment of the Military Monarchy," Theodor Mommsen delivers a meticulous examination of the transformation of Rome from a Republic to an autocratic regime. Through a blend of narrative history and critical analysis, Mommsen provides a vivid portrayal of the socio-political upheaval, highlighting key figures and events that shaped this pivotal moment in Roman history. The work exemplifies 19th-century historiography, characterized by comprehensive research and eloquent prose, which serves both to inform and engage the reader in a rich literary experience. Mommsen's distinctive blend of the analytical and the narrative allows readers to grasp the complexities of power dynamics, military influence, and public sentiment in the late Roman Republic. Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903), a German historian, was equally a lawyer and a politician, passionately devoted to the study of ancient Rome. His scholarly pursuits were fueled by a desire to understand the foundations of modern civilization, and this work reflects his broader philosophical views on governance and the nature of power. Notably, Mommsen was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1902, highlighting his formidable contribution to historical writing and his influence on future generations of historians. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in Roman history, political science, and historiography. Mommsen's authoritative voice and engaging narrative style make complex historical developments accessible, ensuring that both scholars and general readers can appreciate the profound implications of Rome's shift to military monarchy. It is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the foundations of governance that continue to resonate in contemporary political discourse.

What are the lives of America's richest families really like? Their nannies see it all . . .

When Stephanie Kiser moves to New York City after college to pursue a career in writing, she quickly learns that her entry-level salary won't cover the cost of living. But there is one in-demand job that pays enough to allow Stephanie to stay in the city: nannying for the 1%. Desperate to escape the poverty of her own childhood, Stephanie falls into a job that hijacks her life for the next seven years: a glorified personal assistant to toddlers on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

At first, nannying seems like the perfect solution—the high pay covers Stephanie's bills, and she's surprised by how attached she becomes to the kids she cares for, even as she gasps over Prada baby onesies and preschools that cost more than her college tuition. But the grueling twelve-hour days leave her little time to see her friends, date, or pursue any creative projects that might lead to a more prestigious career. The allure of the seemingly-glamorous job begins to dull as Stephanie comes to understand more about what really happens behind the closed doors of million-dollar Park Avenue apartments—and that money doesn't guarantee happiness. Soon she will have to decide whether to stay with the children she's grown to love, or if there's something better out there.
