Beschreibung

The Life of Sr. Marie de Mandat-Grancey and Mary's House in Ephesus tells the story of a faith-filled woman's life of service and her quest to discover the house of the Blessed Virgin in Ephesus.Sister Marie de Mandat-Grancey, a Daughter of Charity, responded to God's call and dedicated her life to find Christ, the Word made Flesh, in service to the poor. The first twenty-five years of her ministry were spent caring for the homebound, educating children, accompanying youth in their spiritual journey, and finding families for orphans. In 1886, Sister Marie was sent to Smyrna, near Ephesus, Turkey, where she entered a world very different from her own. While serving in the hospital there, Sister Marie read and shared with her own Sisters and the local Vincentian priests The Life of the Blessed Virgin, by Anne Catherine Emmerich, which recorded the events of Mary's last years spent in Ephesus in a house built for her by St. John. Because of Sister Marie's great devotion to the Blessed Mother, she was determined to find this sacred spot. Through collaboration with her Vincentian brothers, local Muslim guides, and the people of the area, Mary's house was found; but the discovery was just the beginning.Once rebuilt, Mary's house became a place where Muslims and Christians assembled in peace side by side as they came to honor Mary. The Life of Sr. Marie de Mandat-Grancey and Mary's House in Ephesus will inspire readers with the remarkable story of a faith-filled woman's life and her quest to discover the house of the Blessed Virgin in Ephesus.

Eddie Hertz is smart, real smart. He has to be. What other twelve-year-old patrols the streets of Nirvana alone, hoping to foil the schemes of the evil Mephisto? Since Eddie is small for his age, he trusts in his Batman-style gadgets belt and acrobatic skills as well as lots of experience, like knowing how to swing across dark alleys without being seen. Eddie has a dream, to become like Damocles, Nirvana’s great superhero. To make that dream come true, Eddie invented a device that is supposed to give him superpowers, but using it on himself might be dangerous, possibly fatal. He doesn’t have the nerve to try it. When Mephisto unleashes an earthquake machine to terrorize the city, Eddie gets a surprising teammate — his quirky eight-year-old sister, Samantha, who comes up with an unexpected way to help Eddie in the frantic battle to prevent the biggest earthquake of all. Since Damocles is unable to join the fight, Eddie and Samantha are the only hope for Nirvana and the world.

Jainism, one of the oldest religions in the world, offers a profound philosophical and spiritual framework that emphasizes non-violence, truth, and the quest for liberation. Rooted in ancient Indian traditions, Jainism has significantly influenced the cultural and ethical landscape of India and beyond. With a rich history that dates back over two millennia, Jain teachings focus on the importance of individual responsibility, ethical conduct, and the interconnectedness of all living beings.
At the heart of Jainism lies the principle of Ahimsa, or non-violence, which extends not only to humans but to all forms of life, reflecting a deep commitment to compassion and respect for nature. This principle is not merely a passive refrain from harm; it is an active dedication to fostering well-being and harmony in all aspects of life. Alongside Ahimsa, Jains practice Satya (truthfulness), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (chastity), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness), forming a comprehensive ethical code that guides their daily lives and spiritual aspirations.
Jainism also emphasizes the significance of self-discipline and self-realization as pathways to liberation (Moksha) from the cycle of birth and death (Samsara). The teachings of the Tirthankaras, spiritual teachers who have attained enlightenment, serve as guides for followers on their spiritual journey. These enlightened beings exemplify the ideal virtues of Jain philosophy and provide practical insights for navigating the complexities of life.

This book introduces readers to redemptive service, benevolence, and the pursuit of justice. Bringing together expertise in Christian theology and sociology, Lisa Stephenson and Ruthie Wienk write from the conviction that service to others--especially those who are disenfranchised and impoverished--is central to our identity and mission as Christians.

Redemptive Service articulates the biblical, theological, and sociological foundations of service and explains why it is an important part of true Christian identity. The authors use the parable of the good Samaritan to frame redemptive service as a twofold process. First, true Christian service must emerge from a genuine love of our neighbor, which can only come about when service emerges from a Christian worldview. Second, our vision must be accompanied by intentional and informed action. We must discern and respond to the cries for help that surround us through relief, development, and advocacy work.

The authors highlight why we should engage in service while providing readers with a framework to use when deciding whom to serve and how to serve well.
