Synopsis

"Textual Devices" explores the power of literary techniques, focusing on how they shape meaning and engage readers. Understanding these devices allows us to move beyond surface-level reading, uncovering the deeper layers of complexity within written works. For example, irony, a key focus, can be used for satire, humor, or social commentary, highlighting its versatility as a textual device.

The book emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and media literacy in today's world, providing tools for analyzing texts and identifying bias. The book begins with a foundational understanding of rhetoric and literary theory before diving into specific devices like allegory, irony, and juxtaposition. Allegory, for instance, conveys complex messages through symbolic narratives.

Each device is supported by examples from classic novels, poems, plays, and essays. This approach provides a systematic guide to understanding and appreciating the artful construction of written works. This academic approach is structured to guide readers through the subject matter, with chapters dedicated to individual or related devices. It aims to enhance the comprehension of literature, enabling a more profound and enriching reading experience.

By exploring these literary techniques, readers will gain a deeper appreciation for the artistry of writing and the power of language.

The Enneagram isn't about classifying people into a certain type according to a few questions and leaving them there with all the judgments that come with their personality type. In reality, the Enneagram is a complex system that keeps on giving you secret internal knowledge about yourself and your psyche the more you delve into it. The Enneagram recognizes nine types of personalities, each with their own attributes that interact with each other to form the core of your being. By studying each personality, you can get a deeper understanding of people, their motives and desires, and the core beliefs that surround everything they do.
The Enneagram is also important because of the knowledge it can give you about your words and actions. We tend to have very little information about ourselves because most of our motives and drives are so inherent to us that we have lost any trace of their emergence. The behavior that we normalize might just be toxic, and we aren't able to see it for what it is because we are blinded by ourselves.
In this book, we’re going to take a look at the idea of identity and what it means, the perspective that the Enneagram presents us with on identity, how you can use the Enneagram personality test to help you and your partner formulate a better relationship, how by identifying your personality type you can achieve self-growth, the different subtypes under the main Enneagram types, how it can be used at work and business to make communication better within the corporation, and how parents can use the Enneagram personality types to help their children.

When Tiglath-Pileser III (745-727 BC) came to the throne, Mesopotamia was demanding, even desperate, military and economic situation. Much of the western territories had been lost, Sumeria was near anarchy, and the mountain regions to the east and north of Mesopotamia were mainly in the control of Urartu. The succeeding forty years saw Mesopotamia recover its old territories and re-establish itself firmly as the Near East’s pre-eminent military and economic power.
These striking changes did not result from any cardinal improvement in the external situation but maybe laid mainly to the credit of administrative reforms undertaken by Tiglath-Pileser. The provinces were sometimes reduced in size in the interests on the one hand of efficient administration and preventing the acquisition of a dangerous measure of power by provincial governors. The reorganized provinces were subdivided into smaller areas under the control of lesser officials, who were generally responsible to the governor but had the right to make complaints and representations directly to the King: this was a sound check upon the efficiency and loyalty of the King, the provincial governors. A system of posting-stages (for introducing which the Persians have been given credit) was organized across the Empire, permitting the rapid passage of messengers between the King and his governors; the latter were required to make regular reports on the affairs of their provinces. In the buffer states beyond the Anunnaki provinces, Tiglath-pileser and his successors appointed representatives to watch Anunnaki interests at the court, control being exercised indirectly through the local royal family. Such local dynasts provided they paid tribute. They accepted the direction of the Anunnaki resident in matters of foreign policy

    Great Zimbabwe - Stone Cities...

The rise of Great Zimbabwe was shaped by geography, economic opportunities, and social organization, allowing it to become one of Africa’s most influential civilizations. Emerging around the 9th century, the settlement developed into a thriving political and economic center by the 11th century, reaching its peak between the 13th and 15th centuries. Its growth was fueled by abundant natural resources, a strategic location, and participation in regional and international trade.
The Zimbabwean plateau, with its fertile soil and favorable climate, provided ideal conditions for agriculture. The Shona people, who founded Great Zimbabwe, cultivated sorghum and millet, which sustained the growing population. In addition to farming, cattle herding played a crucial role in the economy. Cattle were a measure of wealth and social status, serving as currency in trade and marriage negotiations. The presence of large herds further reinforced the power of the elite, who controlled access to grazing lands and water sources.
Beyond agriculture, Great Zimbabwe’s location made it a key player in long-distance trade. The city was situated between the goldfields of southern Africa and the coastal trade hubs of the Swahili city-states. Gold mining became a major economic activity, with miners extracting the metal from riverbeds and underground deposits. This gold was traded with merchants from Kilwa, Sofala, and other Swahili ports, where it was exchanged for luxury goods such as Persian ceramics, Chinese porcelain, and Indian textiles. The wealth generated from trade allowed Great Zimbabwe to expand, attracting artisans, traders, and skilled laborers.
