Synopsis

Apprenticeship Systems explores the pivotal role of hands-on training in shaping skills, professions, and economies before widespread formal schooling. It examines how apprenticeship systems functioned, their social and economic impacts, and their evolution over time. These systems were crucial for transmitting skills and fostering economic growth, offering vital vocational training and workforce development opportunities.

The book challenges the notion that formal education is the only path to skill mastery by diving into the history of education. The book analyzes specific trades like blacksmithing and carpentry, detailing how apprenticeship operated within each. It also investigates the decline of traditional apprenticeship due to industrialization and the rise of formal education.

By examining historical apprenticeship indentures and guild records, the book provides a ground-level view of how skills were transmitted and how apprenticeships functioned as social institutions. The book begins by defining apprenticeship and its core components, then progresses to examining specific trades and industries. It culminates by considering the decline of traditional systems and exploring modern efforts to revive apprenticeship models.

This historical analysis offers insights into skills-based learning and informs contemporary efforts to design effective vocational training programs.

The Boys of ’67 and the War They Left Behind
The experience of the Vietnam War is almost impossible to grasp—the fear, smell, pain, and camaraderie. Boys were turned into men, men were transformed into soldiers, and then from soldiers to warriors.
These warriors had wives who shared in their transformations. Some marriages were strengthened, while for others men and their families were left emotionally and spiritually battered for years to come.
Focusing in on a singular company’s experience of war and its eventual homecoming, Andrew Wiest discusses the shared experience of combat and both the darkness and resiliency of war’s aftermath.

In 1769, Captain James Cook’s historic expedition in the region would lead to an English claim on Australia, but before he reached Australia, he sailed near New Zealand and spent weeks mapping part of New Zealand’s coast. Thus, he was also one of the first to observe and take note of the indigenous peoples of the two islands. His instructions from the Admiralty were to endeavor at all costs to cultivate friendly relations with tribes and peoples he might encounter, and to regard any native people as the natural and legal possessors of any land they were found to occupy. Cook, of course, was not engaged on an expedition of colonization, so when he encountered for the first time a war party of Māori, he certainly had no intention of challenging their overlordship of Aotearoa, although he certainly was interested in discovering more about them.
Taking into account similarities of appearance, customs and languages spread across a vast region of scattered islands, it was obvious that the Polynesian race emerged from a single origin, and that origin Cook speculated was somewhere in the Malay Peninsula or the “East Indies.” In this regard, he was not too far from the truth. The origins of the Polynesian race have been fiercely debated since then, and it was only relatively recently, through genetic and linguistic research, that it can now be stated with certainty that the Polynesian race originated on the Chinese mainland and the islands of Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. Oceania was, indeed, the last major region of the Earth to be penetrated and settled by people, and Polynesia was the last region of Oceania to be inhabited. The vehicle of this expansion was the outrigger canoe, and aided by tides and wind patterns, a migration along the Malay Archipelago, and across the wide expanses of the South Pacific, began sometime between 3000 and 1000 BCE, reaching the western Polynesian Islands in about 900 BCE.

"The Analysis of Mind" by Bertrand Russell is a philosophical book that explores the nature of the mind and consciousness. In this work, Russell argues that mental phenomena can be analyzed and understood through the principles of logic and mathematics. He posits that the mind can be divided into two categories: the "conscious mind" and the "unconscious mind". The conscious mind is the part of the mind that we are aware of, while the unconscious mind is the part that we are not aware of but which still influences our behavior. Read in English, unabridged.

    'KWANTU MEANS HOME'
For decades, African spirituality has been demonised or met with suspicion. Many people find themselves at a crossroads that has them questioning their religious upbringing while trying to understand their place within African spiritual practice. There are those who have to choose between being a believer, usually in the Christian faith, or believing in their ancestors. As the cultural trajectory of the world shifts, more people desire a deeper understanding of ancestral practices, their history and their relevance to modern life.
Journey Kwantu is inspired by Vusumzi Ngxande's popular podcast of the same name that delves into South African spiritual identity, showing how it has evolved over hundreds of years. The book is rooted in extensive historical research, lived experiences and interviews with healers, teachers and ordinary people trying to live their truth.
With a unique ability to simplify complex issues, the author endeavours to answer taboo questions like, 'Who are we?' and 'How did we come to believe what we believe?' In the process, he deals with challenges he has struggled with on his own spiritual journey, from death, the afterlife and the authority of ancestors versus the power of God, to more practical matters like performing rituals in urban areas and understanding lineage and its impact on one's spiritual life.
Deeply perceptive and engaging, Journey Kwantu offers guidance and sustenance to African believers.
