Synopsis

Tacitus' "The Annals & The Histories" stands as a seminal work in Roman historiography, chronicling the tumultuous periods of the Roman Empire and the civil wars that followed the death of Nero. With a keen eye for political nuance, Tacitus employs a prose style characterized by its eloquence and sharp moral depth, weaving together events that highlight the corrupting influence of power and the complexities of human nature. His meticulous attention to detail and psychological insight into figures such as Tiberius and Vespasian allows readers to grasp the intricacies of governance and the fragility of liberty in times of upheaval. As a senator and a praetor, Tacitus was not merely an observer but a participant in the very political climate he describes, which undeniably shaped his narratives. Living during a time when the Roman Empire was marked by both grandeur and decay, Tacitus sought to understand the lessons of history to warn future generations. His elite background and personal experiences with tyranny and moral decay lend authenticity and urgency to his historical writings, compelling readers to reflect on their contemporary contexts. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the intricacies of power, the dynamics of history, and the human condition. Tacitus' insights resonate profoundly with modern audiences, and his unwavering examination of human motivations serves as a timeless reminder of history's cyclical nature. Engage with his powerful prose to uncover the lessons embedded within the annals of a civilization that continues to influence our world today.

In terms of geopolitics, perhaps the most seminal event of the Middle Ages was the successful Ottoman siege of Constantinople in 1453. The city had been an imperial capital as far back as the 4th century, when Constantine the Great shifted the power center of the Roman Empire there, effectively establishing two almost equally powerful halves of antiquity’s greatest empire. Constantinople would continue to serve as the capital of the Byzantine Empire even after the Western half of the Roman Empire collapsed in the late 5th century. Naturally, the Ottoman Empire would also use Constantinople as the capital of its empire after their conquest effectively ended the Byzantine Empire, and thanks to its strategic location, it has been a trading center for years and remains one today under the Turkish name of Istanbul.
The end of the Byzantine Empire had a profound effect not only on the Middle East but Europe as well. Constantinople had played a crucial part in the Crusades, and the fall of the Byzantines meant that the Ottomans now shared a border with Europe. In the wake of taking Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire would spend the next few centuries expanding its size, power, and influence, bumping up against Eastern Europe and becoming one of the world’s most important geopolitical players. It was a rise that would not truly start to wane until the 19th century. Naturally, the Islamic empire was viewed as a threat by the predominantly Christian continent to their west, and it took little time for different European nations to start clashing with the powerful Turks. In fact, the Ottomans would clash with Russians, Austrians, Venetians, Polish, and more before collapsing as a result of World War I, when they were part of the Central Powers.

The Olympic Class ships were intended to be the greatest liners to ever sail the oceans, but the Britannic sank only four years after her sister ship the Titanic. While the wreck of the Titanic is two miles below the surface and rapidly deteriorating, the Britannic is much more accessible (only 400 ft down) and remains largely intact. One of the largest passenger ships ever to have sunk, her wreck presents a unique opportunity to explore the interior of the Olympic Class liners, and examine areas which on the Titanic simply no longer exist.

Simon Mills bought the wreck of the Britannic in 1996 and has spent more time exploring it than anyone else. Inside the Britannic is the sum of decades of work covering every inch of the shipwreck as he searches for answers to century-old questions, and discovers new mysteries to solve. Simon takes a forensic approach but this book is more than just the autopsy report of a ship.

The Britannic may have been lost over a century ago, but Simon Mills's fascinating new book gives everyone unparalleled access to rediscover her.

Phaedo is one of the dialogues written by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. It is a philosophical exploration of the nature of the soul, the afterlife, and the concept of knowledge. The dialogue is set on the day of Socrates' execution, and it recounts the conversation between Socrates and his followers, including Phaedo, about his impending death and their beliefs about the soul.
Throughout the dialogue, Socrates argues that the soul is immortal and that the pursuit of knowledge is the key to achieving true wisdom. He uses a variety of analogies, including the idea of the soul being like a prisoner trapped in the body, to illustrate his points. Socrates also discusses the theory of Forms, which holds that there is a separate, ideal realm of existence that contains perfect and eternal Forms or Ideas, such as Beauty or Justice, that the physical world merely approximates.
Phaedo is considered one of Plato's most influential works, and it continues to be studied and debated by philosophers and scholars today. Its themes of the nature of the soul, the afterlife, and the pursuit of knowledge are central to many philosophical and religious traditions, and its exploration of these concepts continues to be relevant to contemporary discussions in ethics, epistemology, and metaphysics.

The 1960s opened with a sense of cautious optimism in America. Following the stability of the postwar 1950s, the country was on the brink of transformation. The seeds of change were being planted by a young and increasingly restless population. The rise of youth culture signaled a break from the conservatism of their parents’ generation. Young people began questioning authority, traditional values, and the social norms that had shaped American life for decades. Television became a powerful force in shaping ideas, music spread messages of rebellion, and college campuses buzzed with debates over justice and freedom. Teenagers and young adults embraced new forms of expression, setting the stage for a cultural revolution.
At the heart of this evolving decade was the civil rights movement, which had already begun stirring in the 1950s. In the early years of the sixties, the push for racial justice gained momentum, marked by nonviolent protests, sit-ins, and mass marches. African Americans, particularly in the South, fought against systemic racism and demanded equal treatment under the law. Martin Luther King Jr. became a prominent voice during this time, advocating for civil disobedience and peaceful protest. As the movement grew, so did the urgency for legislation that would challenge segregation and discrimination. The activism of this period began to awaken a broader consciousness about social injustice, laying the groundwork for other rights movements to follow.
On the global stage, the Cold War continued to cast a long shadow over American life. The rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union defined much of the political atmosphere. The threat of nuclear conflict loomed, and the government’s efforts to contain communism influenced both foreign and domestic policy.
