Emotional or psychological dependence on sugary foods and beverages, also known as sugar addiction, is a fundamental cause of concern for health officials in America. Processed foods and refined grains create additional sugar in the body once the body metabolizes the food. Sugar in moderation is not harmful; however, many overdo it. A recent study suggests Americans eat far too much sugar. Specifically, approximately 75% of Americans eat excessive amounts of sugar, many of whom could be classified as having a sugar addiction.Sugar consumption can create a short-term high and a spark of energy in the body. Some studies have suggested sugar is as addictive as cocaine. People often enjoy the dopamine release sugar brings. However, due to the addictive nature of sugar, long-term health effects like obesity and diabetes are a risk of sugar overindulgence. Like other compulsions or behavioral addictions, sugar addiction is a risk for people with low moods, anxiety, and stress.This book explored sugar use, as an additive process, through the lens of emotional regulation, addressing the research question: What is the lived experience of emotional regulation through sugar addiction? This book aimed to a greater understanding of the interdependent nature of sugar and emotions. What might a sugar-addicted population express that facilitates recovery and emotional regulation? The lived experience revealed that envy, deprivation, fear of sugar control, and lack of support from authority figures contributed to an inability to get enough comfort foods or stop overconsumption and to feelings of guilt, shame, and loss.

  Gen. Larry Spencer, USAF (Ret.) was born and raised on the Horseshoe—a tough inner-city street in southeast Washington D.C. The Horseshoe was a hard neighborhood where fights were common, and the school systems were second-rate. The expectations of living in an all-Black neighborhood were to be good at sports while shunning academic prowess. That environment resulted in poor self-esteem and a bleak outlook for the future. 
   
   
   
  Quite by chance, Spencer enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he continued to struggle with the racial turmoil of the 1970s. As a very young first lieutenant, he was assigned to a tough job in the Pentagon, but Spencer earned an early reputation as a fast burner. Spencer went on to serve at the White House, and then successfully commanded a Group and a Wing before being assigned as the chief financial officer (comptroller) for Air Combat Command. During that assignment, Spencer was promoted to brigadier general and was tasked to set up a new Directorate at Air Force Materiel Command. Spencer later returned to the Pentagon where he led Air Force Budget. He ultimately became the Air Force's thirty-seventh vice chief of staff, making him one of only nine African Americans promoted to four stars. Spencer concludes his historic climb with life lessons learned on his journey from the inner city to the Pentagon.

  Feudalism was a dominant social, economic, and political system in medieval Europe that shaped the lives of millions from the 9th to the 15th centuries. Rooted in the decline of the Roman Empire, it emerged as a response to the need for local defense, stability, and order. With the fall of centralized authority, particularly in the wake of the collapse of Roman imperial power, local leaders, and warriors filled the vacuum, giving rise to a new hierarchical structure that became the backbone of medieval society. 
  At the heart of feudalism was the relationship between lords and vassals, defined by a system of land ownership and mutual obligations. The land, or fief, was the most valuable asset in the feudal system. Lords, or landowners, granted portions of their land to vassals, typically in exchange for military service, loyalty, and other obligations. In return for this land, vassals swore an oath of fealty to their lord, pledging to serve him in times of war, provide counsel, and honor the lord’s authority. This bond was often formalized through ceremonies that emphasized loyalty and trust, making feudalism not just a legal arrangement but a deeply personal relationship. 
  In addition to the lord-vassal dynamic, serfs and peasants formed the labor force that sustained the feudal economy. While lords and vassals fought battles and governed lands, serfs worked the fields and managed agriculture, which was the primary source of wealth in the medieval world. Unlike slaves, serfs were bound to the land, unable to leave without their lord’s permission. In exchange for protection and the right to work the land, serfs provided a portion of their crops and other goods as rent.
