Ian Lancaster Fleming (May 28, 1908 to August 12, 1964) was an English writer, best known for his James Bond series of spy novels, and his only children's novel, Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang. Fleming came from a wealthy family connected to the merchant bank Robert Fleming & Co., and his father was the Member of Parliament (MP) from 1910 until his death on the Western Front in 1917. Fleming himself was heavily involved in British intelligence during World War II. Raymond Thornton Chandler (July 23, 1888 to March 26, 1959) was an American novelist and screenwriter. His first novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939. All but one of his eight novels have been made into motion pictures. Chandler had an immense stylistic influence on American popular literature, including pioneering the hardboiled school of detective fiction. The protagonist of his novels, Philip Marlowe, is considered by some to be synonymous with "private detective." The following recording is from the late 1950s.

Henry Lee learnt to ride before he was five, joined Washington's Army at nineteen, and was appointed Captain of the Fifth Troop of Virginia Dragoons at twenty. At twenty-two, Colonel Lee took command of a mixed cavalry and infantry unit known as "Lee's Legion"—the finest offensive team in the Continental Army. Nicknamed "Light-Horse Harry" for his raids on British supply wagons, the young Virginian quickly earned a reputation for horsemanship and distinguished himself as one of the most skilled and courageous cavalry officers of the American Revolution.

After the war Lee served in the Virginia legislature, in Congress, in the Virginia Convention of 1788 that ratified the federal Constitution, and as governor of the state. His political career was interrupted while he commanded the Army to put down the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. From 1799 to 1801 he served in the House of Representatives.

Noel B. Gerson charts the triumphs and tragedies of one of the nation's most distinguished citizens, whose rise to fame was overshadowed by bankruptcy, imprisonment, and injuries he received from an angry mob. Drawing on a wealth of contemporary sources, including private correspondence and Lee's own published memoirs, Gerson masterfully portrays a dedicated patriot and natural-born soldier, a trait he passed on to his son, General Robert E. Lee.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reorganized existing methods of exchange, turning comparatively marginal technologies into the new normal. Multipoint videoconferencing in particular has become a favored means for web-based forms of remote communication and collaboration without physical copresence. Taking the recent mainstreaming of videoconferencing as its point of departure, this anthology examines the complex mediality of this new form of social interaction. Connecting theoretical reflection with material case studies, the contributors question practices, politics and aesthetics of videoconferencing and the specific meanings it acquires in different historical, cultural and social contexts.

    The Battle of Gettysburg -...

The Battle of Gettysburg stands as one of the most significant events in the American Civil War. Fought from July 1 to July 3, 1863, it marked a turning point in the conflict, shifting momentum firmly in favor of the Union. It was the largest battle ever fought in North America, involving over 160,000 soldiers and resulting in nearly 50,000 casualties. The immense scale of the battle and the high human cost underscore its importance, but Gettysburg's significance goes beyond just the number of lives lost. It was a critical moment in the war, a pivotal clash that ultimately determined the future direction of the United States.
Before Gettysburg, the Confederate Army, led by General Robert E. Lee, had gained significant victories in the Eastern Theater, including the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia was emboldened by these successes and was determined to continue its efforts to win independence for the South. In the spring of 1863, Lee decided to take the fight to the North, hoping that a victory on Union soil would weaken Northern morale, pressure the U.S. government for a peace settlement, and gain international recognition for the Confederacy. His strategy was bold but fraught with risk, as it carried the potential to either decisively break the Union or set the stage for a resounding Confederate defeat.
On the other side, the Union Army, led by Major General George G. Meade, was in a period of transition. Meade had only recently been appointed to command, replacing General Joseph Hooker. The Union Army had been struggling to achieve decisive victories after a series of failures, and morale was low. However, the Union leadership understood that they could not afford another loss to the Confederacy. Gettysburg would become their test—a chance to halt Lee’s advance and potentially reverse the tide of the war.
