  This is a tale of A BLACK MAN, not THE BLACK MAN, for we're not a monolith. We each have different ways of being. Maybe a collection like this changes perceptions, for we’re not only a group who share a similar hue. There’s a range to our melanin, a variety in BLACK MEN, not every man is hyper-masculine.  
  However, to our stereotypes, we’re hyper-vigilant.  
  This collection crafts a narrative that encompasses the different aspects of a BLACK MAN. Each section is diverse and unique but tells the tale of the whole man, the whole person. I'm hopeful this will change the way we're viewed in the eyes of some. For we're not merely the sum of our parts. We're people, we're men. We each have a purpose, families, and friends. We have hearts, flaws, and strengths too. We have joys and talents, just like you.  
  And just like everyone else, we seek to find a balance. 
    
  Every day we try to do our best just being men, for it's already hard enough being Black, Man!

  With some deep, dark laughs – and some deep, dark love – England & Son is a one-man play by Ed Edwards, first performed by the celebrated political comedian Mark Thomas.
  It was first produced by HOME Manchester and Tin Cat Entertainment, and premiered in Paines Plough's Roundabout during the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, directed by Cressida Brown, where it won a Fringe First Award. It went on to win the New Writing Award at the OffFest Theatre Festival Awards in 2024.
  This edition also features an illuminating essay by the author, 'Writing the End of Empire'.

  The highly acclaimed Russian classic of twentieth-century theatre about a wealthy family unable to let go of the past or face the future. The cherry orchard on the Ranevskaya grounds is known throughout the country for its beauty, but it now sits on the brink of ruin. The entire estate is headed for auction if the family cannot pay off their debts. The land’s fate lies in the hands of the family’s matriarch, Madame Ranevskaya, recently returned from five years in Paris where she wasted away much of her fortunes.  Neither Ranevskaya nor anyone else in her household can fathom the gravity of the situation. But a merchant, the son of a former serf on the land, has an idea . . .  Written in 1903, The Cherry Orchard premiered in Moscow in 1904. It was Chekhov’s last play before his death that same year. Since then, the work has been translated and adapted into numerous languages and performed around the world.

  Bessie Dunlop the Witch o Dalry

  Based on the historical record of Bessie’s ‘confession’ to witchcraft in sixteenth-century Scotland, the episodic structure of the play shows the many characters and events that supposedly made up the catalogue of her crimes, but which in fact testify to her innocence and goodness. Bessie Dunlop, the Witch o Dalry introduces students to different levels and varieties of Scots and English and contains teaching notes, suggestions for classroom activities, and questions for discussion or writing. The original version of Bessie Dunlop, the Witch o Dalry was written by John Hodgart and Martin Clarke in 1977. Hodgart rewrote the play for an EIS Drama competition before revising it again for Hodder and Staunton who published it as a school text in 1995. This 2021 shorter edition is the fourth version of the play.
