An illuminating exploration of 31 incredible women—across art, architecture, dance, literature, and more—whose culture-defining contributions have, until now, been overshadowed by their role as "muses" to history's better-known men.  What does it mean to be someone's "muse"? Historically, to be called a “muse” among artistic circles has been marketed as a flattering title. It is a commendation that most often refers to a woman whose vivacity and beauty are the source of inspiration for a (usually) male artist or creator. Perhaps her inspiring presence is even credited in the story of his success. But the very concept of a muse underestimates these women and their abilities. At its root, muse is a support role, the title a consolation prize that claims to recognize a woman’s greatness—but only in her support of another.I'm Not Your Muse reclaims the narrative of 31 of these extraordinary women, from "The Mother of the Movies" Alice Guy-Blaché to Modernist designer Eileen Gray, prima ballerina Maria Tallchief, storied Harlem Renaissance editor Jessie Redmon Fauset, and many more. Each of these women advanced the narrative of culture and society, pushing the boundaries of visual arts, dance and movement, commercial architecture, music, journalism, and the performing arts. Whether by historical accident or cruel design, their contributions have historically been overshadowed by those of their male counterparts, and often collaborators. In this briskly written, incisively researched compendium, author and researcher Lori Zimmer repositions these women as the main characters of their own lives. Each profile is accented with original illustrations—including jaunty portraits in playfully constructed frames—by artist Maria Krasinski. Together, they highlight the contemporary accomplishments and historical legacies of a wide-ranging group of revolutionary women. Featured women include: Louise Blanchard Bethune Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore Minnette de Silva Clara Driscoll Jessie Redmon Fauset Loie Fuller Martha Gellhorn    Eileen Gray Belle da Costa Greene Alice Guy-Blaché Miss La La Edmonia Lewis Neysa McMein Hildreth Meière Lucia Moholy May and Jane Morris    Na Hye-Sŏk Fernande Olivier Pan Yuliang    Ethel Reed    Clara Rockmore    Ada Bricktop Smith Maria Tallchief Alice B. Created by Merwin Gerard and produced by Collier Young, One Step Beyond was hosted by John Newland, "your guide to the supernatural" (also credited as "Our guide into the world of the unknown"). Newland, who also directed every episode, presented tales that explored paranormal events and various situations that defied "logical" explanation. Unlike other anthology programs, the ABC network series episodes were presented in the form of straightforward 30-minute docudramas, all said to be based on "human record" (implying historically factual events); however, the incidents depicted were closer to popular urban legends dramatized for the screen. The program included the corporate name of sponsor Alcoa in its title for its initial run. In syndication, the program title became simply One Step Beyond.   This volume includes Four tales of the supernatural from worlds beyond our own. Included are: Episode One: The Bride Posessed - A bride begins to predict features of an area she's never seen.  Audio from the television broadcast of January 20th, 1959; Episode Two: Night of April 14th - A girl dreams of drowning in the ocean, then learns her fiance plans a honeymoon for them -- aboard the Titanic.  Audio from the television broadcast of January 27th, 1959; Episode Three: Emergency Only - Coming out of a hypnotic trance, Ellen Larrabee predicts a dangerous train trip for a skeptical witness.  Audio from the television broadcast of February 3rd, 1959; and Episode Four: The Dark Room - A Woman photographer is almost strangled by a man she doesn't know.  Audio from the television broadcast of February 10th, 1959.

    What Your Favorite Color Says...

Color is a fundamental part of human experience, shaping emotions, perceptions, and even behavior. From ancient civilizations to modern psychology, color has been studied for its impact on the human mind. Some colors evoke feelings of warmth and excitement, while others create a sense of calm and relaxation. But beyond their immediate effects, colors can also serve as a reflection of personality and identity. The idea that a person’s favorite color reveals something about their character has intrigued psychologists, researchers, and individuals alike. This book explores the fascinating connection between color preferences and human psychology, offering insights into how and why we gravitate toward certain shades.
How a person develops a preference for a particular color is influenced by multiple factors, including early childhood experiences, cultural associations, and even genetic predispositions. Some psychologists suggest that color preferences are rooted in personal memories—positive experiences with a specific color may lead to a lasting affinity for it. Additionally, cultural and societal norms play a significant role in shaping perceptions of color. For example, while white represents purity and new beginnings in Western cultures, it is often associated with mourning in parts of Asia. These cultural variations demonstrate that color meanings are not universal, but rather deeply ingrained in social contexts.
Despite these external influences, color preferences are also highly personal and can evolve over time. A child who loves bright and playful colors like yellow or orange may later develop an appreciation for more subdued tones such as blue or gray. Life experiences, emotional growth, and shifting priorities contribute to these changes.
