Synopsis

There were many very different bands in progressive rock’s ‘golden age’ of the 1970s. Some tended toward symphonic grandeur, others towards jazz fusion, and yet others ploughed the more immediate end of the spectrum, not to mention the left-field eccentrics and the ‘difficult’ bands. Apart from it all, however, there was Van der Graaf Generator. In a decade stuffed with a wild array of influences and styles, there can be few that pushed so clsoe to the definition ‘unique’ as the four musicians who made up the ‘classic’ line-up of Van der Graaf. For a start, there was the astonishing songwriting and vocal skills of Peter Hammill. But there was much more behind the band to set these men apart. Their unparalleled instrumental configuration saw little or no guitar while organist Hugh Banton handled the bass parts on pedals. David Jackson pioneered an astonishing saxophone style, sometimes playing two instruments at once and using a full effects pedalboard. Drummer Guy Evans filled in everything else. It was and remains a sound quite like no other.Discussing all the band’s albums and Hammill’s solo work at the time, this book documents their incredibly influential first decade as prog’s ultimate ‘outsiders’. It’s quite a ride.

Steve Pilkington is a music journalist, editor and broadcaster. The Zondervan Reflective Audio Study series provides a unique audio learning experience. Unlike a traditional audiobook's direct narration of a book's text, Rembrandt Is in the Wind: Audio Study include high-quality live recordings in which the author teaches the content of the book, discusses important points, and introduces additional sources. The end result is an engaging audio study focused on learning.
Did you know Vincent van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime, and that during the last three months of his life he completed an average of one painting every day?
Did you know that Michelangelo's David is covered in a dusting of human skin?
Did you know Caravaggio murdered several people while he was painting some of the most glorious paintings of Biblical scenes the world has ever known?
Rembrandt Is in the Wind: Audio Lectures is an invitation to discover some of the world's most celebrated artists and works, while presenting the Gospel of Christ in a way that speaks to the struggles and longings common to the human experience.
These lectures are part art history, part Biblical study, part philosophy, and part analysis of the human experience; but it's all story. These sessions traverse the chronological arc of art history in the West, from the Italian Renaissance on. Some artists are well known, others not as much. But together, the stories of their works raise important questions about humanity's hunger and capacity for glory, and all of them teach us to love and see beauty.

Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett was born into a very unusual situation in 1878. He was the eldest scion of a family that had lived in the oldest castle in Ireland since its construction in 1180 CE, and became the 18th Baron Dunsany in 1899 at the age of 21, when his father passed away. He was a soldier, lord, military trainer, propaganda writer, activist, and invented Dunsany’s Chess, in which one player has four ranks of pawns and no other pieces. He published mostly first drafts, writing short stories, fantasy novels, plays, and poems, with over 90 publications in his lifetime. A horseman, hunter and pistol champion whose family and friends were deeply involved in what came to be known as The Troubles. A man court martialled for supporting the Irish War of Independence, who raised toasts to the King in years to come, and worked with W. B. Yeats and Lady Gregory. The list of those luminaries who acknowledge a debt to Dunsany is absurdly long. Lovecraft saw him on a speaking tour and wrote “There are my 'Poe' pieces and my 'Dunsany' pieces – but alas – where are my Lovecraft pieces?”. Tolkien gave a friend The Book of Wonder in order to help prepare for working on the Silmarillion together. Neil Gaiman, Arthur C Clarke, Ursula Le Guin, Guillermo del Toro, CL Moore, Jack Vance, Michael Moorcock and David Eddings were all influenced by Dunsany’s writings, making him much like the Velvet Underground (“Not that many people listened to them, but everyone that did started a band” – paraphrase from David Bowie)
