The Tangut Kingdom - And Its...

The Tangut people, an ethnic group of uncertain origins, gradually emerged as a distinct force in northwestern China. They are believed to have descended from the Qiang tribes, a collection of nomadic and semi-nomadic groups that roamed the Tibetan Plateau and the Ordos region. Over centuries, they migrated and settled in what is now modern-day Ningxia and parts of Gansu and Inner Mongolia, where they established communities and developed a unique cultural identity. Their position between the Tibetan Plateau, the Central Asian steppes, and the Chinese heartland made them an important intermediary in regional affairs.
The Tangut rise to prominence was influenced by their interactions with the dominant powers of the region. The Tibetan Empire, which controlled vast areas of western China until its decline in the ninth century, played a significant role in shaping early Tangut culture and governance. The collapse of the Tibetan Empire created a power vacuum that allowed smaller groups like the Tangut to assert their independence. At the same time, the weakening of the Tang Dynasty left northern China vulnerable to fragmentation, further enabling the Tangut to carve out a space for themselves.
By the tenth century, the Tangut had developed into a formidable military and political entity, leveraging their strategic location along trade routes to establish economic and diplomatic ties with neighboring states. They maintained relations with the Song Dynasty to the east, the Tibetan remnants to the south, and the nomadic Khitan Liao Empire to the north. These interactions not only enriched Tangut society but also introduced them to a variety of political models, from the bureaucratic governance of the Chinese dynasties to the tribal confederations of the steppe.

By 1976, Elton John was the best-selling recording artist and the highest-grossing touring act in the world. With seven #1 albums in a row and a reputation as a riveting piano-pounding performer, the former Reggie Dwight had gone with dazzling speed from the London suburbs to the pinnacles of rock stardom, his songs never leaving the charts, his sold-out shows packed with adoring fans. Then he released Blue Moves, and it all came crashing down. Was the commercially disappointing and poorly reviewed double album to blame? Can one album shoot down a star? No, argues Matthew Restall; Blue Moves is a four-sided masterpiece, as fantastic as Captain Fantastic, as colorful as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, a showcase for the three elements--piano-playing troubadour, full orchestra, rock band--with which Elton John and his collaborators redirected the evolution of popular music. Instead, both album and career were derailed by a perfect storm of circumstances: Elton’s decisions to stop touring and start his own label; the turbulent shiftings of popular culture in the punk era; the minefield of attitudes toward celebrity and sexuality. The closer we get to Blue Moves, the better we understand the world into which it was born--and vice versa. Might that be true of all albums?

The Uninvited - On The Road With...

In 1998, The Uninvited were poised to become the next multi-platinum darlings of the new millennia. With a hit song burning up the charts and a major label release described as “The breakthrough album of the next decade,” everything was teed-up for a life of sold-out arenas, gold plated Ferraris and Dom Perrion on draft. But the chances are you never heard of The Uninvited – so what the hell happened?
THE UNINVITED: ON THE ROAD WITH THE GREATEST ROCK BAND YOU NEVER HEARD is the story of 5 friends stuffed in a van on a Homer-esque nationwide odyssey, clinging desperately to a gossamer thread of one-hit-wonder fame while sharing the stage with legends like Cheap Trick, Blues Traveler, The Violent Femmes, Chris Isaak, and many more.
For two sweat-drenched and mind-altering years, The Uninvited had fame by the tender bits and squeezed hard. And for Steve, just when it looked like life couldn’t get any better, it did; Mia, so achingly unattainable for so many years, landed squarely in the attainable category. But all these dreams collided in a rush to come true, threatening to unravel everything, just when he held it all in his hand.
THE UNINVITED is a chaotic tale set in the early days of Napster and the last days of Warehouse Records on Sunset Blvd. It’s a memoir for anyone who’s ever cranked the volume up on Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins, or stood in the audience singing their lungs out, and wondering what life is like on the other side of that stage. Unlike any other rock memoir, THE UNINVITED chronicles the harrowing sacrifice necessary to attain a dream – and more importantly, what it takes to let it go.
And there was a gnome, too. He was kind of an asshole.
