Synopsis

One of the nine canonical lyric poets of Greek antiquity, Stesichorus flourished in the sixth century BC. He is best known for composing epic stories in lyric metres and for the colourful ancient traditions concerning his life. Scholars at Alexandria divided his verses into 26 books, which now only survive in fragments. The extant titles suggest themes from the traditional epic heritage found in mainland Greece and Asia Minor, as well as in Italy and Sicily. Stesichorus’ poetry broke with the epic tradition, in which a single performer declaimed verse in dactylic hexameters, as his lyric verses in the Doric dialect were accompanied by a stringed instrument. He completed the form of the choral ode by adding the epode to the strophe and antistrophe. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Greek texts. This eBook presents Stesichorus’ fragments, with illustrations and an informative introduction. (Version 1)

Singapore Literature Prize winner Yong Shu Hoong’s latest book features more than just poetry. There is also a ghostly tale at its core, complete with prose poems and micro fiction of exactly 100 words each, as well as annotated excerpts from an abandoned work.

In this viewing party, readers are invited to take a peek into the domain of death and cinema. You are part of a mob of dispassionate onlookers. Sometimes, you get to play the voyeuristic judge.

Winner of the 2014 Singapore Literature Prize for English Poetry

“There’s a warm easiness to Yong’s voice that’s balanced by a sharpness of insight. He cuts through the layers of familial and social habit to the unseen images and urges that give the mundane the sheen of the numinous. If the book is a viewing party, Yong is a genial and attentive host, inviting us in to absorbing scenes of everyday curiosity and surprise.”

"We know where we came from. We came on boats, onplanes, with passports and on the back of trucks. Weworked three jobs and sent the money back home. Webrought our motherland to life in our kitchens, ourbedrooms, our churches, our songs, our dance, our sex,our pidgin, our patois…"
Joshua Idehen's collected works has been a long time coming. Songbook comprises verses from Mercury-nominated and MOBO-winning albums by Sons of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming, alongside watershed poems of spoken word legend, newly captured in book form. From Poejazzi and Benin City to a string of supreme collaborations, Idehen's impact resonates far and wide across the landscapes of poetry and jazz/electronica. Cross-examining colonialism, masculinity, mental health and ways of healing, his writing is an essential provocation, a diasporic dance, a comedy roast, an intervention, a cannonball from which no one is safe, least of all himself.

Published to commemorate the author’s 100th birthday, this wide-ranging and thoughtful collection reflects on history, colonisation, family, childhood, Aboriginal Dreaming, traditions and storytelling, working lives and people.
Sometimes wistful, melancholic, poignant, at times the author’s wry sense of fun and humour shines through.
When he arrived in Sydney in the 1960s, Bigambul man, Uncle Wes, was not allowed to tell his stories at schools. He set up a fire bucket in his backyard and invited families and children from the local Aboriginal community to come to sit around the fire and share his stories. It did not take long for the police to arrive and arrest him for hosting an unlawful gathering – he spent two days in lock-up for sharing his stories.
Uncle Wes is a living treasure of Aboriginal storytelling wisdom. Through his poems Uncle Wes invites the reader to join him by the fire as he generously shares his reflections and reminiscences on one hundred years.
'It is my pleasure to honour Uncle Wes for his work in retaining the age-old storytelling tradition of our people. It is important to maintain this tradition of our Elders sharing their knowledge and insight through story and verse. Thank you Uncle Wes, for sharing your poems with us as you celebrate your 100th year.' - Dr Anne Pattel-Gray: Head of the Australia First Nations Program, World Vision Australia
'Uncle Wes Marne has a unique ability to allow the reader to see through his experienced eyes. The power and wisdom of his words is now more than ever important for the future generations to understand the time and place they exist in.' - Ben Bowen: CEO, Indigenous Literacy Foundation

'I don't visit the past. The past visits me.'
The sharp-tongued Miss Myrtle is trying to manage her unkempt garden in a rapidly changing neighbourhood. Her grandson Rudy and his 'close friend' Jason need a place to stay, and local drunk Eddie keeps relieving himself against her garden wall.
When Rudy starts delving into the past, Myrtle resists – all she wants is some peace and quiet. But as her brain begins to play up, far more complicated questions about grief, love and understanding demand her attention, and she's running out of time.
Miss Myrtle's Garden is a wonderfully warm and witty exploration of how acknowledging the past helps us live life in the present. It was written by Danny James King and first performed at the Bush Theatre, London, in 2025, directed by Taio Lawson.
