Synopsis

Politician, peacemaker, persuader: John Hume was a titan of Irish history – a tireless architect of the Good Friday Agreement who received the Nobel Peace Prize for his part in ending decades of conflict in Northern Ireland.
But who was the real John Hume? What motivated the former history teacher to reach beyond political lines? What sustained him during the bloodiest years of violence? How did he impel the IRA to end its long-running campaign? How did he convince presidents and prime ministers to take risks and back his vision for Northern Ireland? How should he be remembered?
In John Hume: The Persuader, Stephen Walker draws on over 100 interviews with family members, colleagues and critics across the political spectrum, as well as never-before-published interviews with Hume himself, to present a probing, balanced and immensely readable portrait of one of the most significant political figures in Northern Ireland and the world.
'The definitive biography of John Hume.' Freya McClements, Northern Editor, Irish Times
'This superb biography does full justice to a towering figure.' David McCullagh, RTÉ Broadcaster and Author
'A riveting portrait of a man who changed Ireland.' Gary Murphy, Professor of Politics (DCU) and Author
'Scrupulously fair, deeply researched and insightful.' Sam McBride, Northern Ireland Editor, Belfast Telegraph

The story of this Bushman's youngest son starts in 1960s' small town New Zealand where life didn't come without its challenges. This true story begins with a lot of rugby, beer, pig hunting and the socialising that was all part of our basic Kiwi lifestyle. However there was me, Terry, different from the rest of my siblings, separated by design and confusing to my parents... This book takes you through a journey out of Tokoroa and into the world where I tried most things, tasted as much forbidden fruit as I could and did my best to experience all life had to offer at the time, but maybe all that glitters isn't always gold. My extended family's backstory paints a picture of love, heartache, rebellion and loss that many of us would not recover from. Did I conform, did I behave, did I make amends and forgive? Prepare to be challenged, pushed and pulled in all directions as this story seldom has a quiet moment. Desperate times call for desperate measures and sometimes in our lives we react in a way that we later regret, or at least try to. Fatherhood, coming out as gay, sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll all rolled into one story. Not just drama - more like adventure with the everlasting search for a resolution. Circling The Wagons is a raw, courageous memoir that chronicles one woman’s journey to reclaim her life after surviving intra-familial childhood sexual abuse. After decades of silence, the author breaks that silence to tell the story she once could not, offering truth, validation, and hope to survivors everywhere, without oversharing.
Written primarily for fellow survivors of childhood trauma, the book also speaks to friends, family members, and professionals seeking to better understand and support them. Through unflinching honesty and lived experience, Circling The Wagons explores the long-term emotional, psychological, and relational impacts of hidden and unaddressed trauma, particularly when abuse is denied, minimised, or buried within families across generations.
The memoir sheds light on why survivors may struggle with identity, self-worth, relationships, and misplaced guilt well into adulthood. It examines how secrecy, shame, and family loyalty deepen wounds, and how healing begins when survivors reclaim their voice and their truth. Alongside her pain, the author shares hard-earned insights that guided her toward self-discovery, resilience, and healing, demonstrating that a second chance at life is possible.
Serving both as a testament to resilience and a practical guide, Circling The Wagons offers compassionate guidance for navigating complex family dynamics, confronting guilt that never belonged to the survivor, and rebuilding a life rooted in honesty and self-compassion.
This book also provides valuable insight for counsellors, advocates, and professionals in child protection, as well as students and academics in Psychology, Social Work, Criminology, Education, Public Health, Law, and Gender Studies. It will resonate with anyone seeking a deeper, lived experience understanding of trauma, intervention, and generational abuse.

    Jack London

John Griffith Chaney was born on January 12th, 1876 in San Francisco.
His father, William Chaney, was living with Flora Wellman when she became pregnant. Chaney insisted she have an abortion. Flora's response was to turn a gun on herself. Although her wounds were not severe the trauma made her temporarily deranged.
In late 1876 his mother married John London and the young child was brought to live with them as they moved around the Bay area, eventually settling in Oakland where now, calling himself Jack, he completed grade school.
Jack worked hard at several jobs, sometimes 12-18 hours a day, but his dream was university. He studied hard and borrowed the money to enrol in the summer of 1896 at the University of California in Berkeley.
In 1897, at 21, Jack searched out newspaper accounts of his mother's suicide attempt and for the name of his biological father. He wrote to Chaney, then living in Chicago, who claimed he could not be Jack’s father because he was impotent and casually asserted that London's mother had relations with other men. Jack, devastated by the response, quit Berkeley and went to the Klondike. Other accounts suggest that his dire finances presented Jack with the excuse he needed to leave.
In the Klondike Jack began to gather material for his writing but also accumulated many health problems, including scurvy, which together with hip and leg problems he would carry for the rest of his life.
During the late 1890's Jack was regularly publishing short stories and by the turn of the century full blown novels.
By 1904 Jack had married, fathered two children and was now in the process of divorcing. A stint as a reporter on the Russo-Japanese war of 1904 was equal amounts trouble and experience. But that experience was always put to good use in a continuing and remarkable output of work.
In 1905 he married Charmian Kittredge who at last was a soul and companion who brought him some semblance of peace despite his advancing alcoholism and his incurable wanderlust.
Twelve years later Jack had amassed both wealth and a literary reputation through such classics as ‘The Call of the Wild’, ‘White Fang’ and many others. He had a reputation as a social activist and was a tireless friend of the workers.
Jack London died suffering from dysentery, late-stage alcoholism and uremia, aged only 40, on November 22nd 1916 at his property in Glen Elen in California.
