Beschreibung

In "Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich," Stephen Leacock employs his signature wit and humor to craft a satirical exploration of the lives of the affluent elite in early 20th century Canada. Through a series of whimsical anecdotes and quirky characters, Leacock juxtaposes the frivolities of wealth with the absurdity of human nature. The prose is marked by a lively narrative style and a keen sense of irony, as Leacock reflects on themes of class, idleness, and the search for meaning in a materialistic society. This book resonates within the context of the Canadian literary tradition, where humor often serves as a lens to critique societal norms and expectations. Stephen Leacock, a prominent figure in Canadian literature, is celebrated for his light-hearted yet incisive examinations of social mores. Born in 1869 in a rural Ontario community, his experiences navigating diverse social landscapes significantly informed his depictions of class dynamics. The author's scholarly background in economics and political science further enriched his observations, allowing him to dissect the frivolities and follies of the idle rich with expert precision. "Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich" is a delightful read for those who appreciate humor interwoven with social commentary. Leacock's keen insights and engaging narrative make this book a timeless classic that not only entertains but also invites readers to reflect on the peculiarities of wealth and privilege. Whether one seeks laughter or contemplation, this work promises to offer both.

The Angel of the Revolution: A Tale of the Coming Terror (1893) is a science fiction novel by English writer George Griffith. It was his first published novel and remains his most famous work. It was first published in Pearson's Weekly and was prompted by the success of The Great War of 1892 in Black and White magazine, which was itself inspired by The Battle of Dorking.A lurid mix of Jules Verne's futuristic air warfare fantasies, the utopian visions of News from Nowhere and the future war invasion literature of Chesney and his imitators, it tells the tale of a group of terrorists who conquer the world through airship warfare. Led by a crippled, brilliant Russian Jew and his daughter, the 'angel' Natasha, 'The Brotherhood of Freedom' establish a 'pax aeronautica' over the earth after a young inventor masters the technology of flight in 1903. The hero falls in love with Natasha and joins in her war against society in general and the Russian Czar in particular. It correctly forecasts the coming of a great war, but in pretty well all other respects widely misses the mark of the real events that followed. Nevertheless, it is a gripping and exciting story of intrigue and plot interwoven with love and romance played over a background of world war. - Summary by Wikipedia

This is a collection of some of the delightful nonsense verses and stories by Edward Lear. A lot of them are also my favorites. The Jumblies, The Owl and the Pussy-cat; the Broom, the Shovel, The Poker and the Tongs; The Duck and the Kangaroo; The Cummerbund; The Dong with the Luminous Nose; The New Vestments; Calico Pie; The courtship of the Yonghy-Bonghy-Bo and Incidents in the Life of My Uncle Arly. Also included at no extra cost are two sections with my favorite Lear limericks. Only about 30 of them but they are all funny and full of delectable silliness. I hope you enjoy listening to these as much as I enjoyed recording them.
