Beschreibung

When the final episode of Seinfeld aired on 14 May 1998, an amazing 76.3 million Americans tuned in, making it the most popular situation comedy is US television history. Co-created by Larry David, this 'comedy about nothing' made celebrities of its four stars: stand up comedian Jerry Seinfeld; comedian and actor Michael Richards who played eccentric neighbour Kramer; Julia Louis-Dreyfus who played Jerry’s former girlfriend, Elaine and Jason Alexander as his volatile, insecure best friend George. Unique in its outlook and execution, the success of the series lay in its early years, able to develop its own style below the radar as a minor network hit, before reaching a mass public with its fourth season in 1992. Classic episodes discussed here include: ‘The Junior Mint’, ‘The Chinese Restaurant’, ‘The Puffy Shirt’ and the ground-breaking ‘The Contest’.

Much analyzed during its time on screen, the show has not been re-evaluated for many years. Now, over twenty years since the series finished, Stephen Lambe's timely and superbly-crafted new book examines Seinfeld's first five seasons episode by episode, tracing the development of every character, catchphrase and quirk, from the series' embryonic pilot episode in 1989, to its status as an Emmy award-winning show by the time that season five wrapped in 1994. While the series was a huge success in the USA, it was also a cult hit across the globe, and its legacy continues into the new millennium.

Stephen Lambe is an author and publisher. He first became addicted to Seinfeld watching late-night re-runs on British television in the 1990s. An American Studies graduate, he has since seen every episode many times. His books include an analysis of the British 'Carry On' series published by Sonicbond in 2019. He lives in Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire, UK.

"An engaging glimpse into a world both fascinating and fundamentally unknowable to those who aren't born into it." —R. E. BURRILLO, author of Behind the Bears Ears

Craig Childs bears witness to rock art of the Colorado Plateau—bighorn sheep pecked behind boulders, tiny spirals in stone, human figures with upraised arms shifting with the desert light, each one a portal to the open mouth of time. With a spirit of generosity, humility, and love of the arid, intricate landscapes of the desert Southwest, Childs sets these ancient communications in context, inviting listeners to look and listen deeply.

The astounding story of the quest to find the living descendants of the most monstrous tyrant in history - Adolf HitlerAdolf Hitler was one of six children born to his mother, and one of eight born to his father from two of his three marriages. Alois Hitler, né Schicklgruber, was an official of the Austrian customs service, and the combination of an imperial uniform and a severe drinking habit seems to have ensured that Hitler's father was a drunken bully given to beating his children if they were not instantly obedient.Alois had two children, Alois junior and Angela, by his second wife, and six by his third, Hitler's mother Clara, of whom four, all boys, died at birth or in infancy. Young Adolf was therefore left with a half-brother, Alois, and half-sister, Angela, and a full sister, Paula, who died in 1960. When Hitler killed himself in April 1945, all his siblings were still living and some had children of their own. So, what happened to them? The answer is that no one was really certain until David Gardner published this book in 2001, having patiently and steadfastly tracked down Hitler's living relations to the USA, and made contact with some of them. Now revised and updated, this is a fascinating study of a little-known side of Hitler's history, as well as a riveting account of how the author traced and contacted the survivors of a bloodline that most of the world probably hoped had become extinct.

"You have seen how a man was made a slave; you shall see how a slave was made a man."

In this searingly honest and powerful account, Frederick Douglass reveals the harrowing reality of slavery in the American South. From the soul-crushing toil on the Lloyd plantation to his life-changing confrontation with the "slave-breaker" Edward Covey, Douglass chronicles his journey from a state of bondage to the reclamation of his own soul. He famously details how he secretly taught himself to read and write, realizing that education was the "pathway to freedom." This narrative is not just a historical document; it is a timeless testament to the power of literacy, the resilience of the human spirit, and the relentless pursuit of justice.

The Battle for Human Dignity: The turning point of the narrative is Douglass's physical fight with Edward Covey. This moment represents the internal shift from a broken spirit to a man determined to be free, illustrating that resistance—both mental and physical—is the cornerstone of liberation.

A Critique of Hypocrisy: Douglass's prose is sharp and uncompromising. He famously contrasts the "Christianity of Christ" with the "Christianity of this land," exposing the moral bankruptcy of those who used religion to justify the horrors of the slave system.

Why It Is Essential Reading: Short, visceral, and profoundly moving, this narrative changed the course of history. It forced the world to acknowledge the humanity and genius of the enslaved, making it one of the most effective tools in the fight for abolition. To read it is to understand the very heart of the American struggle for equality.
