Synopsis

“You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.” – General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Order of the Day, June 6, 1944

By May 1944, more than 2.8 million Allied troops, with 4,000 American, British and Canadian ships, were amassed in southern England, waiting to cross the English Channel in the largest seaborne invasion of history. More that 1,200 planes stood ready to deliver specialist airborne troops behind enemy lines, to silence German ground resistance and destroy local infrastructure, and to dominate the skies of the battle theatre. D-Day provides a photographic exploration of this monumental military and political event that helped bring about the end of Nazi Germany’s four-year occupation of Europe. The book is divided into chapters covering the first days of the landings on the five beaches: Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno and Sword; separate chapters cover the airborne landings of the famous American 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and the British 6th Airborne, as well as the crucial help of French Resistance fighters in providing intelligence and disrupting German communications and supply lines.

Where is the driving force for change? Who envisions a better future, crafts the path to democracy, and strategizes the movement? Who fuels it with revolutionary zeal and the will to power? And where is the force that can fulfill the unfinished promise of Iran's Constitutional Revolution? In three words: The Iranian Citizenry. Thirty years before Iran's Constitutional Revolution, the treatise One Word (Yek Kalameh) ignited a movement—challenging absolute monarchy, advocating the rule of law, and empowering the people. Now, Two, Three Words (Do, Se Kalameh) draws inspiration from the courageous youth of Iran. It articulates their aspirations, forges a new discourse, and unites a narrative that could pave the way for democratic alternatives.

A compelling study into the history and lasting influence of enslaved Native people in early South Carolina.

In 1708, the governor of South Carolina responded to a request from London to describe the population of the colony. This response included an often-overlooked segment of the population: Native Americans, who made up one-fourth of all enslaved people in the colony. Yet it was not long before these descriptions of enslaved Native people all but disappeared from the archive.

In Enslaved Native Americans and the Making of Colonial South Carolina, D. Andrew Johnson argues that Native people were crucial to the development of South Carolina's economy and culture. By meticulously scouring documentary sources and creating a database of over 15,000 mentions of enslaved people, Johnson uses a uniquely interdisciplinary approach to reconsider the history of South Carolina and center the enslaved Native people who were forced to live and work on its plantations. Johnson also employs spatial analysis and examines archaeological evidence to study Native slavery in a plantation context.

Throughout history, violence against children has taken every possible form (physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, neglect, and child labor), at times adopting quite strange shapes. He went on to say that in ancient times, even the right to life had to be conferred by a rite; before that, a kid with no rights might be disposed of as casually as an aborted fetus.Throughout much of history, adult-adolescent sexual interaction was not only permitted but often the standard; adult-child sexual interaction was somewhat less common but still reasonably prevalent. Many famous historical characters demonstrate that adult/adolescent, and to a lesser extent adult-child, sexual behavior was widespread and generally tolerated. The man-boy partnerships that were frequent in ancient Greece and Rome are one of the most well-known examples. Individual examples include St. Augustine, and Mahatma Gandhi.Child abuse and neglect do not often have visible warning signals. However, by learning to spot the indicators of a problem, you can make a significant impact on a child's life. Child abuse is more than simply black eyes. While physical abuse is horrifying because of its scars, not all indications of child abuse are as visible. Ignoring a child's needs, leaving them unsupervised in risky settings, exposing them to sexual situations, or making them feel worthless or foolish are all forms of child abuse and neglect that can leave profound, lasting scars on children.Abuse and neglect of any kind leave permanent scars. Some of these scars may be physical, but emotional scarring has long-term consequences, affecting a child's sense of self, future relationships, and capacity to perform at home, work, and school.Individuals who have been traumatized as children face unique issues that can be addressed via various healing techniques. The approach used and its efficacy differ from person to person and frequently change over time as the nature of trauma and healing shifts.

Far more than just a faint echo of the past, Ireland's fairy forts are still vibrantly alive.
The traditions connected to them are so powerful that, even today, people rarely interfere with Irish fairy forts or fairy trees. They aren't built on; roads curve around them; farmers don't plough over them
The most numerous ancient remains in Ireland today, numbering up to 50,000 or more, these enigmatic mounds and grassy banks seem to call out to us from an earlier time. So, what are they, who built them and what were they for? And how have so many survived for so long?
With evocative photographs by Richard Mills, master folklorist Jo Kerrigan explores the origins of these mysterious circular structures: the stories and legends, the history and archaeology, the living traditions and practices connected to them. And reminds us of the dangers of disturbing the ancient spirits dwelling beneath.
